Music reviews of Era VulgarisMusic Review: A Twisted Vision of what is sure to be the future of alternative rock Rating: 4 Stars
After a dissapointing effort in "Lullabies to Paralyze" Queens of the Stone Age returns after two years and puts out one of the best album of 2007. The sick twisted lyrics of Josh Homme intoxicate the listener with an eerie sense to get up and mosh. While most the members are newer to the band they still provide solid backing vocals and the slick guitar moves of Troy Van Leeuwen make me proud.
1. Turnin' On the Screw- One of the more dissapointing songs on the album. The guitar is the most solid part of the song with the vocals lacking any substance this song starts off with a promising rift only to be followed by unruley vocals. As the song progresses you hear more of the same. While the chorus is very addictive Turnin' On the Screw isn't a solid opener, it should of been put way back into the album and another song replacing because the lead off song is always the difference maker and this song fails to deliver anything new. 2.5/5
2. Sick,Sick,Sick- The most solid track on the album, the sickening but pleasurable guitar rift to start it off quickly hooks the listener. Josh Homme's vocals are sincerly dark and dirty but they are addicting like a drug. The mesmerizing chorus is what brings this song into focus, five words total, Sick,Sick,Sick, Don't Resist. While charming and gritty this song does have its pitfalls, the guitar work slowly gets weaker as the song progresses but the song itself overly overcomes these pitfalls. This song truely is "Candy to Cum Too." 5/5
3. I'm Designer- Queens of the Stone Age's most electronic song to date. It is twisted and full of beats that will keep any QOSTA fan happy. The lyrics are incredibly well written and very deep and true such as "My generation is for sale." Homme's voice isn't as solid as it could be but really no song is perfect. Although the guitar while simple is incredibly smooth and well done. This is one of the stand out songs on the album. 4/5
4. Into the Hollow- A slow and yet fast moving sorta love song. While not as good as it could be I see this as one of the tracks were the drummer Joey Castillo delivers a drumline so simple but oh so trippy. Homme's voice in this truely shows how adept he is a singer. The guitar is all mashed up and horrible in this song. Decent but definitly nothing to write home about. 3/5
5. Misfit Love- Another electronic song by the Queens of the Stone Age. Misfit Love truely lack in comparison to I'm Designer. The vocals are usually light and unappealing. While Homme's vocal range increases everything else either stays the same or gets worse. While this song is far from perfect it is definitly not the worst song on the album. The electronic work on Misfit Love is incredible, although this song does remind me a little bit of Nine Inch Nails. 3/5
6. Battery Acid- The beginning of this song delivers a slow dark start while setting into a pop punkish guitar beat. Homme's voice echos and truely shines in this song. While once again the lead off drums and guitar aren't anything impressive they do the song justice and keep with its dark but light pace. A halway decent song good middle song. 3.5/5
7. Make it Wit Chu- This song is really the worst song on the album. The piano and the guitar easily overpowers Homme's vocals making his words hard to understand, while the guitar and piano are nice I feel that this song is a little to light for my favorite hard rock band. This song is very weak and I suggest skipping it after you've listened to it once. 1.5/5
8. 3's & 7's- This is were the guitar shines the most and Homme's vocals rock this song to its foundation. The guitar is loud and proud in this song and it tears it away and Homme's vocals and nice and upbeat and then right at the appropriate time it switches to his signature deep dark vocals. The electronic mix is incredibly smooth and makes this song a bonafied hit. 5/5
9. Suture your Future- A truely deep and dark song. Homme's vocals are loud but deep at the same time. The simple guitar aides Homme's voice to its fullest potential. The drums are quick, simple and fit the song perfectly. I say an above average song but it is still nothing near the best tracks on the album. 3.5/5
10. River in the Road- This song is just like Suture your Future but it keeps a dark steady pace. Homme's vocals in this one reminds of Villie Valo the lead singer of HIM. The guitar and drums once again keep steady and don't pull anything big. A somewhat dull song but it still managed to keep my intrest(for awhile). 3/5
11. Run, Pig, Run- A truely impressive end to a truely impressive album. The guitar work is truely great and Homme's vocals stand out like a red head in a group of emo kids. Homme's vocals are a little on the weak side but the guitar truely saves him. The drum work needs brutal improvement but overall the tracks on the album really don't contain much solid drum work. The main chorus is truely mesmerizing and terrifying, a good solid track. 4.5/5
Overview- A solid album that has few weak points, I suggest going out and buying it if you want A Twisted Vision of what is sure to be the future of Alternative Rock.

Description of Era VulgarisUK pressing of the 2007 album from Hard Rockers features two bonus tracks: 'Running Joke' and 'Era Vulgaris'. Queens Of The Stone Age are back with more juicy guitar ear hole injections, as they put Rock `N' Roll and just about everything else to rights with their new album. This mind-blowing album sees the band return to their deepest, darkest roots, with shadowy riffs reminiscent of the desert sounds of the Kyuss days combined with multi layered industrial power guitar and organ blasts of a new era. It was produced by long time Queens production cohort Chris Goss and Josh Homme himself at their hideaway in the dunes of Joshua Tree. Julian Casablancas from The Strokes and Mark Lanegan appear as guests on various tracks. Polydor. Latin for "common era," Era Vulgaris holds a pair of common threads with the four Queens of the Stone Age records that preceded it. One, it crosses colossal guitar chords with the most volatile of hard rock melodies. And second, it's as LOUD as loud gets, thanks to Josh Homme, the impatient instigator behind the ever-evolving cast of personalities that make up the band. Detonation comes with track one, as the jagged riffs of "Turning on the Screw" lead the listener into "Sick, Sick, Sick," where Julian Casablancas spews his vocals beneath a wall of multi-guitar catcalls. Although the head Stroke will likely garner the most attention, perpetual Queener Mark Lanegan's velvety pipes earmark two of Era's most booming selections: the funky "Make It Wit Chu" (complete with Temptations-like backing vocals) and the heart-racing three minutes of "River in the Road." Add the garage rock of Homme's "3's & 7's" and "Suture Up Your Future," easy pickings for most likely crossover hit, and Era Vulgaris-- hypnotically and explosively common--holds its own with any in the QoTSA discography. --Scott Holter
