Music reviews of Miracle

Music Review: Expertly Crafted Pop
Rating: 5 Stars

I like to think of The Miracle as the updated version of 1983/84's The Works. Both albums were more modern pop rock than the old rock Queen fashioned in the '70s.Both albums utilized the technology of the period(drum machines, synths, etc.)to great advantage and while exploring differnt song styles, both were undeniably Queen. The album in between these two,A Kind of Magic,(which I also reviewed here)was partially a film soundtrack, and coupled with some uninspired songs, doesn't seem like as "complete"a Queen album as others.

At this point in their career Queen had long left behind the over the top rock guitar extravaganzas in favor of more straightforward modern pop craft. As a fan,I feel most of Queen's albums up to News of the World were very solid and mostly filler free.In my simple view, the songs they did in the 80's and 90's don't have the impact of what they did on albums like Sheer Heart Attack,News of the World,Queen 2,etc.Alot of stuff they did was just too conventional sounding compared to the theatrics of the 70's.Instead of drawing a straight line,I usually divide Queen into the 70's period and then the 80's-90's.

The Miracle had all the Queen trademarks:the vocal and guitar harmonies, variety of song styles and top notch musicianship, but of course, updated for the 80's pop market and not as flamboyant as the past.

One thing I must emphasize about The Miracle is the excellent production, songwriting and of course, superb musicianship of all 4 members.Of course I'm biased, and while I can also understand that alot of people DON'T like Queen, people should really listen to albums like this to hear how the pros do it.

Freddie Mercury had one of the most unique voices in pop/rock and it's a treat to hear how he shapes his voice to fit the different styles and moods on this album. The other members are at the top of their game as well, this can be realized when you take for granted that there isn't alot of flashy playing from say, bassist John Deacon. You hear that he is playing EXACTLY what is needed for the song, not a wasted note anywhere.

"Party"is just a quick, fun opener to the cd,not a memorable song, but just quick fun and harmless."Khashoggi's Ship"is not my favorite song here, kind of a simple, foot stomping dumb rocker, much like"Tear it Up"from The Works."The Miracle"is a great pop song all around, and Brian May delicately weaves his perfectly sweet melodies strategically throughout the song."I Want it All"is a much needed dose of ROCK,with Brian's guitars and Freddie's vocals bringing much needed grit and power to the game."Invisible Man"is more of a club style track(does anyone really play Queen for the dancefloor?)all hi-tech synths and drums.

"Breakthru"is an upbeat energetic tune, with a nice bass line from John Deacon taking a brief turn in the spotlight."Rain Must Fall"is kind of a modern reworking of "Who Needs You".It's a pure fluffy pop confection, with Roger's sampled steel drums adding to the modern world music influenced tune."Scandal"is my choice for underrated pop tune,a counterattack to life under the paparazzi microscope, with Freddie's perfectly anguished vocals and the dual synth/guitar main melody."My Baby Does Me"is a moody, bass heavy groove that could have fit on Queen's dance/r&b influenced Hot Space album."Was it All Worth It"is the big epic on the album, combining Brian's monster riffs and excellent use of symphonic synths and effects.

The two cd only bonus tracks"Hang on in There"and"Chinese Torture"(the latter a Brian May mini-instrumental)are nothing groundbreaking but they once again display the Queen ethic. These guys made high quality pop and even on throwaway songs they give it their all.

The following album,Innuendo, would be their last, and while that album took Queen's skills and talent and took it to the next logical step while putting a little pomp and theatrics back in,seems a bit too, well, dramatic compared to The Miracle. The Miracle is a better upbeat party album,I think you could take The Works and The Miracle to be the best representation of modern day Queen.
