Music reviews of Hot Space

Music Review: 100% Queen & Good Funk,too;People-Open'p Your Minds & Listen
Rating: 5 Stars

This is in no way a bad funk album, in general, and "not the worst" album by Queen, in particular (come to think of it, Queen never had a bad album, may be some are better than the others, depending on listeners' personal preferences in musical styles, but there was never a bad album! ). HOT SPACE DESERVES TO BE HEARD, LISTENED TO, AND BOUGHT FOR SEVERAL REASONS. Firstly, just because Queen, FM in particular, tried something new here, does not mean it is worse than their usual style (operatic, over-the-top rock). It is just different... Please, keep in mind that it was 82, times were changing and so was Queen. In fact, Queen was never known to stop experimeting in their music throughout almost 20 years of acitve recording, touring, and huge success. Secondly, may be Hot Space is not the best funk album in the history of funk, but it is certainly one of the very good ones. Yes, some tracks have sort of plastic and sometimes unpolished sound, but funk is supposed to be this way, to a degree. Funk is fun, humorous, and even grotesque music (think George Clinton here) and that is good...that is why people liked it and still do and that is why we say "Funky music". Thirdly, every single track is good for its own reasons. "Under Pressure" is a masterpiece of collaboration, of course. FM and Bowie are so good that even they were surpised at first at how good they sounded together. "Life is Real" achieves the effect FM was striving for: surrealism in lyrics and music. "Las Palabras De Amor", while by no meas the best of Queen's love-ballads, is definitely a very good ballad (I am sure, Latin fans especially appreciate it, since it is touching to see your favorite foreign artists trying to write a song in your language and with you (fans) in mind, albeit only few Spanish words out of the whole song). "Body Language" is just as hot as it is witty (as well as it should be according to the album's title). I am sorry to say that people, who did not have a chance to see the video, can not fully appreciate this song. "Body Language" video talks with humor about our over-sexed society, where human bodies are seen as nothing more than faceless objects used as machines for mechanical pleasure. The same goes to "Calling All Girls": video complements the song greatly. This video talks about the future of human race (Queen always saw ahead of the rest of the world, after all...) controlled by robots and also about threat of censorship. "Staying Power" and "Put Out The Fire" are definitely "concert songs", so, good for you, if you saw them performed on any of Queen's concerts (whether live or on tape). "Cool Cat" is simply delightful, if you appreciate FM's falsetto and humorous silliness in so many of Queen's songs (e.g. "What a Fool I Have Been", "Brighton Rock", "Fat-Bottomed Girls", as well as so many others). "Action This Day" is simply up-lifting..... I can understand, if some people, who started their relationship with Queen's music with "Greatest Hits" or with Queen's first two albums ("Queen" and "Queen II"), are taken aback by Hot Space. Some people even felt angry at some point about Queen's starting to use synths and other electronical devices from "Game" on... But, I simply can not believe that these people would forget so easily that for the first straight ten years of their recording career Queen did not use any of the devices whatsoever and that they would blame Queen for trying to be up-to-date in their music, instead of becoming "rock'n'roll dinosaurs". FINALLY, I urge you to keep your minds and ears open, lighten up, and have some fun with this album, without taking things too seriously. It is 21 century outside and Hot Space was conceived in 1981-82. I am sure that had FM still been alive, Queen would be working on something new and progressive this very moment. But, he is not, so let's appreciate what Queen, as a group of four very talented and able people, left us in their twenty years of glory.
