Music Review: No words can describe how astonishingly good these are

I'm going to keep this short. These are not just great performances, they are DEFINITIVE performances. Once you have heard Mravinsky work his magic with Tchaikovsky's 4-6 symphonies, you can't imagine them being played any other way. Easily among my 10 most cherished recordings in a collection of well over 2,000 CDs. What I can't figure out is how anyone could even suggest these are anything less than 5-star performances--do those of you who did even *know* this music?? The stereo sound in these recordings is tremendous. I'm sort of shocked that these recordings, made in the early 1960s in the U.K. (while the orchestra was on tour), sound so spectacular. One other thing--don't confuse these recordings with the earlier mono set from the 1950s that DG remastered under its "Originals" series--which are NOT the equal of these. These will cost you more, but at nearly any price they are still a bargain for something so good.
The bottom line: These are among the greatest performances/recordings in all of classical music.

These recordings by Evgeny Mravinsky and his Leningrad Philharmonic, taped in the autumn of 1960 while they were on tour in London, are among the absolute classics of the catalog. They are readings of hair-raising intensity--the finale of the Fourth is marked allegro con fuoco, and if you want to know what con fuoco means, all you have to do is listen for a moment. No one else has ever had the nerve, or the ability, to play the music this way. The treatment is very Russian: the extremes are more extreme, the passions more feverish, the melancholy darker, the climaxes louder. In that department, the development section of the first movement of the Path?tique has to be heard to be believed. The sound is remarkably good for the time, a little edgy in the loudest pages but wonderfully present, just like the performances themselves. --Ted Libbey
