In general, Seiji Ozawa is a fine Tchaikovsky conductor. His Berlin recording of the Fifth Symphony is very good. I also have heard him in a 1970's broadcast from Saratoga conduct the Philadelphia in a stunning Fourth Symphony. He also did a telecast with Boston from Carnegie Hall of the Pathetique that was highly worthwhile. So I'm really puzzled by this Swan Lake. The orchestra plays well in the big moments, tempos throughout are reasonable, and the sound engineering is very good. But the whole thing is never moving. Instrumental solos, while certainly neat enough, are never well characterized--with the exception of Concertmaster Joseph Silverstein's. Phrases pass us by in a four square manner. Ozawa never seems to have an opinion about the score, let alone any passion for it. It's quite possible, given what BSO players have said about him, that he may not have even known the score very well. This was the first set of CDs of Swan Lake that I added to my collection. Since then, I have bought complete recordings by Dorati, Svetlanov, and Ondrej Lenard, and all of them are considerably more satisfying than Ozawa's, despite his advantage of having the Boston Symphony. I have to think of somebody I don't like very much to give Ozawa's to.
Description of Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake
Swan Lake was the first of Tchaikovsky's three great ballets-- works which added a new level of depth and sophistication to what had been a purely superficial art form. Today the music is so well-known and popular that it's impossible to comprehend the difficulties the composer experienced at early performances. Audiences found the music "too symphonic," and the dancers were put off by the prominence given to the orchestra which, they felt, distracted ballet fans from the action on stage. Of course, all of these supposed "defects" are precisely what we admire about the music today, and this elegant but exciting performance reveals the music in all of its glory. --David HurwitzGeneral CDs
