Music Review: An 1812 Alone Worth the Price, But Other Goodies, Too!

So many others have commented on this CD that I will merely add a comment or two on points not mentioned by others.
The Gothenburg Symphony plays this music in a remarkably lovely (and often exciting!) way, thanks largely to the efforts of its conductor of over 20 years, Neeme Järvi, who during his tenure added greatly to its stature. (Now emeritus, Mr. Järvi was succeeded by the youthful and greatly talented Gustavo Dudamel.) The instruments not only play well and accurately, but in doing so display a symphonic richness and deep resonance of tone seldom heard elsewhere. The sound is partly the result of substantial reverberation in the recording locale, and that may be either good or bad. The good side is the rich sound quality just mentioned. The bad side is that sometimes the lower instruments, which gain most from the reverberation, outbalance the upper voices. Also their faster moves may become somewhat blurred. Too, the overall weight of sound can be a problem for pieces demanding lighter weight and thinner textures.
Still, the other reviewers have definitely got it right with respect to the great performance of the 1812 Overture. It is a sensational sonic and musical achievement! (More sonic than musical, perhaps, as even Tchaikovsky thought little of its musical merit. He was a bit too critical, though: it's better than he thought.) The chorus and authentic cannons add greatly to what was always meant to be a sound spectacular. In particular the Russian hymn is a powerfully moving thing!
Unlike some, I think the Marche Slave comes off very well here. The richness of orchestral sound definitely adds to its effect. Also the Steppes of Central Asia sounds very good overall, only lighter orchestrated sections perhaps weighted down a trifle.
Some parts of the Polovtsian Dances--and maybe even the whole piece--are thickened a bit too much. After all, the Khan wouldn't plausibly have a symphony orchestra on call to entertain his captive guest, Prince Igor. I do like the bass solo here, in addition to the chorus. The dances alternate between the graceful femininity of young maidens and the boisterous athleticism of young male warriors.
The Great Russian Easter Overture benefits from the added resonance. It was meant to be solemnly grandiose music, and so it sounds here.
The Capriccio Espagnol (or Capriccio on Spanish Themes, as Rimsky-Korsakov dubbed it in Russian) often benefits, but sometimes suffers, from the reverberation. Some violin solo parts might be better with less reverb, but some of ensemble sections, like the sweet, slowish horn melody near the beginning are enriched.
All in all, this is a great symphonic-sounding recording which I find enjoyable to listen to, even where the sound may be a tad heavier than the ideal. And the 1812 Overture is a thing not to be missed!
