Music Review: Listening and dancing music

You cannot go wrong with this lovely collection of African music. It is, as the cover correctly states "a joyous musical celebration" and an excellent introduction for future African music fans as well as a treat for those familiar with the music by some or all of the featured soloists and groups. Showcasing artists from six countries, some internationally well known such as Johnny Clegg (South Africa) or Habib Koité (Mali), while others deserving wider recognition beyond their country or region, the compilation is an excellent example of the diversity and richness of African rhythms, melodies and voices today. For somebody like myself who has been focusing on Malian and West African music, the addition of several Central African musicians in particular (Congo and Cameroun) is particularly welcome. Songs can get under your skin and the temptation to get up and dance can be difficult to resist.
The accompanying booklet provides brief yet useful bios and an introduction to the artists' musical heritage or approach. Putumayo is known for its well-presented and produced series of world music compilations and this is no exception. An excellent CD for dancing or just easy listening. It is as fresh today as it was when published in 1999. [Friederike Knabe]
