Music Review: Punchline - Action - Album Review

Challenging convention can be a difficult thing to accomplish. Of course unless your in the band Punchline. Punchline's new album entitled `Action' ironically fast-forwards from their `Rewind EP'. If you liked `The Rewind EP', you're in for more than a treat when you put this in your CD player. You'll come face to face with 12 without a doubt amazingly constructed and musically superb tracks that not only fit seamlessly together, they don't make you sulk and contemplate your pathetic existence. With the aptly named first track `Open Up', we hear the `fast forward' from the previous album explode into a plethora of guitars complimenting each other followed by a demonstration of Steve Soboslai and Paul Menotiades' harmonization skills. The songs twists and turns of its short course of 2 minutes and 47 seconds, ending with and explosive scream that sits you back in your seat, `cause you were probably jumping around like an idiot. `Not Afraid' follows demonstrating minor chords and angst ridden lyrics, "I'm not afraid anymore." Possibly a tale of standing up for yourself, but followed by "Like robot maids in Rocky IV, it makes no sense but what's for sure." collectively expressing the bands personality in sincerity. "The World" expresses interesting combinations of tempo changes and lyrics that speak to you "Congratulations, I guess your always right." Definetly a solid musical compilation on all four parts, specifically PJ Carsuo's dissimilar, completely on time, percussion demonstration. "Heart Transplant", which was once only available on a Promotional Limited Summer Sampler CD, is now re-recorded with the rest of the songs under the wing of Sean O'Keefe (Motion City Soundtrack, Fall Out Boy, Spitalfield). Complete distinction and absolutely flawless technique in both the recording process and post production shine like a diamond all throughout `Action'. Vocal overlays and a song that ends with such a powerful 4:4 timing make this track one of the strongest on the album, but still allowing you to sing along at the end. Moving forward towards "Time In A Picture" the lyricism is evident from the first sentence, "I arrive alive, to my demise, it's another sunny day." Crunchy guitar riffs fluidly connect left and right ending with a rather soft lulling picking of the guitar with a solid drum beat fading in from the background that picture perfectly transitions into the most dynamic track on the album, "Coldest Of Calendars". This melancholy tune about personal dissatisfaction includes a guest appearance by Justin Oliver of `The Casual Lean' who unfortunately has experienced "Nights without sleep, days without daylight." The album's next turn allows us to pull ourselves out of depression and tells us a story of dealing with the cards were dealt and being happy with that. In "Getting There Is Getting By", Chris Fafalios opens with a distinct bassline constructed faultlessly with the incoming drum beat. "Why Is He Right?" is definetly going to be a popular one with the youngsters. It is a classic pop punk tune that still explores all the areas of musical technicalities. "Battlescars", the anthem of the album puts so much passion into your ears, they almost bleed because they really do feel "sorry". "A Sharp Is A Flat" is the most passionate, dynamic, heart-felt song Punchline has ever constructed. Telling the story of their band with emphasis on the cello and how hard it is to succeed as a band, Steve Soboslai talks directly to the listeners singing "I will give you all my blood, my sweat, my tears, to be the one who puts the music in your ears." Heartfelt and honest, I sincerely belief "This little band" is on their way to success, so don't worry guys. "A Beautiful Green" though alternatively different, maintains the same elements as other Punchline songs, without elaborate lyrics. Assuming the song depicts their home of Belle Vernon, PA they do an amazing job of incorporating studio production to get the message they want across. To finally close the CD, we have Paul Menotiades' anthem on how he by far is not done. "Just Getting Started" emphasizes Paul's capabilities to construct a song that is honest, lyrically amazing, yet simply almost at the most complex level. Though Punchline would like to rise to the top, they are patient guys who "aren't racing anyone, anywhere." `Action' takes punk music to a new level, making Punchline a prime example of modern day music standing the test of time and putting to shame the same ol' stuff we hear everyday. Take a dive in, spend your money on something you will listen to more than 3 tracks on and pick up one of the first 5 star albums in punk rock history, `Action'.
