Music Reviews of Planet EarthMusic Review: Not Prince's Best, But Still Solid! Rating: 4 Stars
Prince has returned somewhat to his roots with this cd which has a pop-mellow feel to It. The music flows beautifully In the classical Prince style. But there Is something missing. Perhaps It Is just too short,(only 10 songs) It's Like It just getting started and It ends. Now some, want Prince to make another sign of times or purple Rain but those days are Long gone. Prince has some very bad cds come out Rainbow Children, Come etc. But, he has grown, and we should not Look for him to be the prince of 25 years ago. He would Look rather silly at age 49 singing what he sung at age 26. We sometimes don't want to see an artist grow, or go In a different direction. The first part of the cd Is kind of slow but then It picks up. As far as It being too preachy, or political I don't always agree with eveything Prince puts In his songs but I see It as a part of his growth as a person and a artist. My only grip Is that It just was not balanced, or long as I would have liked. But,even with that being said, this Is still a cd worthy of being purchased!
Music Review: Best in the "Comeback" Trilogy Rating: 4 Stars
Since Musicology was touted as Prince's comeback record, we've heard him grow stronger on each subsequent release. Musicology had it's moments, 3121 was almost great........just a few songs that never took hold of me. But Planet Earth has just been solid from the first spin, it's got a funky feel to it that is hard to put your finger on. I hear alot of the Love Symbol album, some 3121, and for some strange reason the ballads remind me of Parade.......and finally the opening track takes me back to Around the World in a Day, not sure why. So if you're a fan of a certain Prince style or era, I feel like your going to find something here that you will love. If you've spent a good portion of your life listening to everything that's come out of Paisley Park, I can't imagine you not liking this one. Planet Earth is a gem, not a classic in my mind yet but I remember thinking the same thing about Lovesexy after a couple of listens.........and now it's impossible to live without......Buy it.....May U live 2 see the Dawn.
Music Review: Planet Pop Rating: 4 Stars
I was expecting Rock but Plantet Earth is Pop. So I was a bit disappointed at first, but I've grown to appreciate this collection. The best track (IMHO) is "Chelsea Rogers" whch is funky and fun. It's the kind of Prince I'd like to hear more of. "The One U Wanna C" is another great track and it sounds like classic Prince through and through.
The rest of Planet Earth is a mixed bag and I appreciate it more for the music than for the odd, un-moving lyrics. Here's a sample, "Just like the countless bodies that revolve around the sun, Planet Earth must now come into balance with the one." That's way too vague to be moving and comes off as trite. Prince can write inspiring lyrics (The Ladder, The Cross, Holy River) but it seems he wasn't really inspired or something here.
Thank goodness the music itself is so darn catchy. I've found myself humming a few of these songs in the last week and I'm sure many other Prince fans will too. I just wish the meal was a bit more substantial.
Music Review: be careful with your expectations....... Rating: 3 Stars
I made the mistake of reading a few reviews (Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, etc.) prior to buying this CD. I was very excited that the reviews called it a "return to form" and compared it to "Purple Rain" and "Parade" era Prince. Add to this the fact that Wendy and Lisa are part of the band here, and I was definitely looking forward to hearing "Planet Earth." Well now that I have listened to it for several days...there is certainly his usual genius on a few songs, but way too many ballads/slow jams (his most recent CDs seem to have TERRIBLE pacing...i.e., the sequencing of songs sucks)...there is no doubt that "Guitar" is a cool single and that there's a few good funky tunes here, but again, to me I found about half of it to be filler. His crappy songs are still better than most people's gold, but this is not Purple Rain the sequel, or the successor to Parade or Sign o' the Times, etc. Oh well, I will keep holding out hope...and enjoying a few of the songs on here.
Music Review: A Pleasant Surprise. Rating: 4 Stars
Prince seems to have reached a comfortable plateau in his career, he no longer feels the need to shock the masses by simply being outrageous but shocks us still by 1.) the mere fact that he's still around and 2.)by being one of the most prolific, exciting and consistent artists in music today. Did you see the Super Bowl Halftime Show?, the man is true rock royalty! "Planet Earth" is exactly what I was hoping for from his next album, more rock, loads of guitar, live drums and his freakishly elastic voice. The opening title track, "Resolution" and "Guitar"(a super-catchy throwaway)and "Futurebabymama" are destined to become staples in his live show and possible radio hits, while "The One U Wanna C" should get much love on urban outlets. The production on this direct, 10 track LP is also pristine with Prince's bee-sting guitar and the percussion mixed right up front, so you don't just hear the music, you feel it. Along with "Musicology" and "3121" Prince has created another classic trilogy.
