Music Review: Oi! If you love the movie, you gotta own the soundtrack!

If you're a fan of Alex Cox's movie, you must own this soundtrack. One can almost rewatch the movie in one's head every time one listens to the soundtrack. It opens with Joe Strummer's "Love Kills" which echoes a prescient line uttered by Nancy in the film. The Pogues' "Haunted" is a truly beautiful love song that perfectly mirrors Cox's reimagining of Sid and Nancy as a punk Romeo and Juliet. The Pogues' "Junk" underscores how the burgeoning relationship is both tied to and doomed by heroin addiction. Gary Oldman's "I Wanna Be Your Dog" forces one to remember Sid's spiral from "fabulous disaster" to human trainwreck. Oldman doing Vicious doing Sinatra "My Way" doesn't make Ole Blue Eyes seem particularly non-conformist by comparison. Pray For Rain has a large presence, with four tracks, each of which is closely associated with a specific scene: "Off the Boat" immediately evokes images of Sid and Nancy on the Thames, walking unscathed through the violence and chaos surrounding them; "Chinese Choppers" recalls the aerial shots of the Sex Pistols' tour buses rolling across the American plains; "Burning Room" eerily produces metaphoric images of Nancy gazing into the flames that are about to consume them; "Taxi to Heaven" never fails to remind one of the final scene in which Cox attempts to give back to Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen something infamy took from them: serenity.
