Music Review: ESSENTIAL!

Powerhouse Gospel is compiled by Opal Louis Nations, one of the foremost gospel researchers and collectors in the world. What he has done here is to select 100 performances that, unless you own the original pressings, you are deeply unlikely to have ever heard before. There's an absorbing mix of the classic post-1945 vocal groups, standing shoulder to shoulder with singing preachers ,who are afforded an entire CD to themselves, but few rural guitar evangelists (for which you need the top-rate "Fire In My Bones" 3CD set on Thompkins Square).
Every performance here is simply stunning. No, I mean it, it's actually time to go out on the limb of hyperbole and say that there's not a dud track to be endured on the entire set. Quite a few, especially the preachers, were recorded live in church, the most well known being Aretha Franklin's old man the Reverend CL Franklin. But there's folks including the Reverend Jelks and the Reverend George Killens, who you've probably never encountered, and who conclusively prove that the fire burned as fiercely in them as it did in Franklin.
The quartet sides are riddled with obscure folks, including several performances from test pressings seeing the light of day for the first time, so even if you think you've got it all, suddenly you haven't. The sound is wonderful, though a few are a shade noisy, but that's as good as they'll ever get. Mr. Nations notes are concise, fact filled and feature information on both artists and labels. This is my gospel reissue of the year already. Don't dither, just buy it.
