Music reviews of Power to the PeopleMusic Review: WOW!
I mean...WOW! These guys are ready for a full blown new release...never mind the live stuff. The live tracks are good, typical, as live recordings go. They took a chance by including a guitar solo by C.C. Deville and a drum solo by Rikki Rockett. This is unusual for a live album. I think it has both good and bad points. On the up side, it showcases the players. On the down side, the people who like guitar solos or drum solos are usually musicians. Musicians can pick out technical excellence or flaws. The rest of the people that listen to a band are generally more interested in the songs themselves. Some folks may therefore feel the solos are not necessary on a CD. In all fairness, with seventeen tracks on the CD, I think the solos work just fine, although I am NOT a musician myself. I WOULD say that, while I like hearing Riki play drums, HIS solo is a little long. At 4.52 minutes it ties one other song time wise and is otherwise the second longest song on the album. They kept C.C.'s solo down to a nice trim 1.29 minutes. Of the five NEW studio songs, C.C. Deville takes over vocals for "I Hate Every Bone in Your Body But Mine". I have mixed feelings on this tune. On the one hand, the tune is really good, and C.C. does a decent job on the vocals. On the other hand, I am not especially fond of the lyrics. While the other new songs on the album are more mature, lyrically, THIS song sounds somewhat juvenile and dated. "This chick" is an example of a reference in the song that just sounds juvenile to me. Then, it is just an overall...trashy statement the song is making. It is talking about a "chick" the guy hates but will sleep with anyway. Hates? Maybe I am overanalyzing, but the lyrics on this song are missing the mark on what Poison has traditionally been all about in my opinion. I mean, naughty can be fun, for example "I Want Action" is a fun song...but trash for the sake of trash...I just can't relate to really. I also notice, in the live portion, Bret is CONSTANTLY mentioning C.C. Deville. I do not know how many shows this album has tracks from, but I have never heard a band announce their guitarist repeatedly like this. It seems a little strange. It becomes almost comedic after a while. Don't get me wrong, I do not have anything against C.C. personally. I just do not understand why the guitarist needs to be announced so often, nothing more. Overall, I would definitely recommend this album on the strength of the new tracks and the fact that the live tracks are all bona fide Poison classics. I think the new tracks show great promise for the future of Poison, although I hope they stay away from the trashy lyrics in the future. I think the old, and in this case, live tracks, show that Poison can still perform their older music with style. An artist should be proud of ALL of their work. I think Poison is showing they have something to be proud of, both in their past and in their present. The reason I rated it 4 stars is, well, I do not think this is the absolute BEST Poison can do, as my review reflects...and Amazon does not give the option of rating something 4 and a half stars. :o) Hey, if 3 stars is average then 4 is still ABOVE average, right? Pick up your copy of "Power to the People", and then check out some of your other favorite bands. Fans of this end of the rock and roll genre may be pleasantly surprised to learn that many of the melodic hard rock bands have 1999-2000 releases. Need a memory jog? Click on over to my home page on Amazon. I have most of the bands reviewed or at least mentioned. "Don't wait for a better day. Or you won't get there at all." -Kane Roberts-(Used with his kind permission.)
