Description of Natural Thing
After their venture into electronica, Poi Dog Pondering returns to making beautiful, rich pop music with Natural Thing. This 11-member music ensemble combines elements of blue-eyed soul, pop, rock, funk and techno into a unique and unforgettable blend, supporting intelligent and moving songs. They juxtapose a laid-back soul groove, allowing the band to songs to move in any direction.Poi Dog Pondering have survived numerous lineup changes (Frank Orrall is the only constant member), geographical relocations (Hawaii to Austin, Texas, to Chicago), and musical shifts (their quirky folk-rock has added world rhythms, hip-hop beats, and a variety of instrumentation that an 11 piece band suggests). Natural Thing is their sixth album and emphasizes enough of a R&B groove to draw comparisons to the freewheeling spirit of Sly and the Family Stone, with every member stepping up to provide a track's special moment. The title cut trades vocals, speaks of "love and devotion," and juxtaposes a laid-back soul groove with a hippie flute. This eclecticism allows the band to vamp in any chosen direction. "Diva (Live at the House of Sound)" moves the band into the techno scene, meshing ambient tones and quick-stepping pulses with the natural sounds of piano. "Berry" adds rap to the mix.
