Music Review: Seemingly limitless potential in a somewhat limited package.

Somewhat lost in the shuffle of an era when every female singer playing anything remotely marketable as alternative music was getting signed to some label or another, Poe was perhaps the most unique and diverse of that lot, and her debut, "Hello", while a bit inconsistent, shows an artist who explores any number of paths and sounds. What holds the record together is Poe's stream-of-consciouness lyrics and vocal delivery.
Like I said, diversity is the key, while much of the album is soaked in synths, hip hop beats and funky guitars (opener "Hello", which pales compared to the hard rocking renditions it received live, "Another World"), Poe spreads her wings to delicate and lovely piano ballads (the utterly fantastic closer "Fly Away"), cello and vocal duets (disaffected "That Day", featuring Cameron Stone on pizzicato cello, overdriven during the chorus), more or less straight alternative (the Pixies in dub of "Trigger Happy Jack", "Choking the Cherry") and one bonafide hit song in funky, sensual "Angry Johnny" (a song that slips between violence and sensuality effortlessly, both musically and lyrically). And while the album fizzles a bit towards the end ("Junkie"), overall it's a superb duet and points to the energy and strength of Poe's live shows.
I'd recommend that anyone interested in this make an effort to seek out the singles from the album, particularly the "Hello" single with the version of that track that explodes like a powder keg in a way that the techno-tinged studio version could never manage.
"Hello" doesn't quite reach the heights you'd like it to, but it ends up being a great album well worth investigation. Recommended.
