Music Review: Mystery, Memory, and Music

I discovered this CD because of a book. Sort of.
I remember hearing one song from "Haunted" a few years ago, and thinking that it had a wonderful creepy quality to it, but I never found out who performed it so I never heard the rest of the album. It took reading "House of Leaves" to help me rediscover the music.
Taken by itself, "Haunted" is an excellent collection of music. Here, Poe has expressed powerful themes of memory and loss, sometimes dark and frightening, sometimes softly reminiscent. The music and lyrics are only part of the story, as we discover through the liner notes that she has also sampled recordings of her father's voice on almost every track on the album. Her father, who died a few years before the CD came out, speaks to us through the music, and she answers, both in the voice of a little girl speaking over some parts, and the grown woman she has become, singing the lyrics of each song. The interplay in "If You Were Here" of the singer's vocals with her father's recorded samples is particularly touching. With this knowledge, listening to the music becomes an act of memorial, remembering someone we never knew.
Beyond the themes of the album, the music itself is impressive. The singer's voice has excellent range, from the high, soft, breathy tones on "If You Were Here" to soulful on "Haunted" to the strong, forceful vocals of "Not a Virgin" and "Hey Pretty" and everything in between. Her voice alone expresses anger, grief, fear, and wistful sadness with equal ability. The instrumentation for each song is ideally suited to it, using complex percussion and keyboard and bass rhythms as an aural backdrop for the stories being told, with ambient sounds and distorted voices in the mix to create atmosphere. All together, it makes for a rich and varied landscape of sound over the whole album, one that is immensely rewarding. There are standout moments of excellence, such as the fast-descending vocals near the end of "Walk This Way" or the use of voice as instrument in "Wild" or the wordplay of "Amazed", that might just make you play it a few times over to catch all the nuances, but really all the music is good here -- there's not a single song on the CD I didn't like, and after listening to it several times I still don't feel the need to skip any.
Music this good is usually rewarding enough, but the ties to the novel "House of Leaves" just adds to what you can get out of this. Some tracks have obvious links to the book, such as "5 & 1/2 Minute Hallway" and "Amazed", but others are more related by theme, like the very moving "Haunted" and "Could've Gone Mad", and in many ways these are the more powerful songs, the ones that really add both meaning and mystery to the linked story of the CD and the book. Reading the book while listening to the music enhances the experience of both.
Whether you've read the book or not, "Haunted" is an excellent album, and really a great example of the power music has to evoke emotion and express things that aren't available through any other medium. Music can be mystery, and music can be memory. "Haunted" is both.
