Music Review: Ritchie Furay's Swan Song...

This was the last album made by the Ritchie Furay version of Poco. As such it also showcases elements of the Geffen soon to be created SHF band. Chis Hillman, Paul Harris, Joe Lala, and Jim Gordon are on this album; all late of Stephen Stills' magnum opus group Manassas.
As such this album is a true masterwork. It opens with "BlueWater/Fools Gold" medley that showcases Paul Cotton's songwriting and Rusty Young's knack for writing breakdowns. Timmy next comes in with the usual empathic songs he was writing at the time, "Here We Go Again."
From here the album really starts to takeoff on a tribute to the late great Gram Parsons with Paul Cotton's interpretation of "Brass Buttons." This being 1973 Gram Parsons had just died. The original side one ends with the angular guitar of "A Right Along."
the original side two begins with Ritchie Furay's own tribute to Gram, the epic "Crazy Eyes." After all Ritchie knew GP and auditioned him for Poco. What follows is a gut wrenching rendition of J.J. Cale's "Magnolia." After all of this emotional pathos Ritchie ends the album with what I think is one of his best songs "Let's Dance." It also contains a killer Paul Cotton guitar solo.
I've owned this Cd since the mid-nineties and find the sound quality on the remaster excellent. After this album Ritchie Furay went to the under-rated SHF Band and Poco submerged to make Poco 7.
