Music Review: Definitely on the darker side of christian music...

I fell in love with this cd, and Plumb in general, when I was in my teens, so as for the whole teenage girl thing metioned in an earlier review, I can talk about this cd from that perspective. I think what really grabbed me about the music on this cd was that it helped me voice some of the questions and doubts that I was experiencing at that time in my life, such as in "Concrete" when it talks about questioning your beliefs, which everyone does at some point in their lives, and I could relate to the music. I also like the way there is so much emotion in the music, at least in my opinion. I don't think that you need to "hide the razors" when you get this cd for a teenager, rather I feel that the desperation and anguish in the songs helped me through my teenage years by being able to get those feelings out rather than keeping them in and doing something worse because of them. One of my favorite things about Plumb is that they (which later turns into just a she with a band) don't shy away from difficult issues such as alchoholism in "Willow Tree" and suicide in "Pennyless", and this trend is seen just as much or more in her next album "candycoatedwaterdrops." Anyway, my personal favorites were not the songs like "Send Angels" or "Cure" because they were too slow for my tastes and seemed to drag on forever; my favorites were "Concrete", "Crazy", and "Endure", even though I enjoyed the entire cd. There is also an interesting hidden track at the end that you might want to listen to that asks, "Is there life on Pluto?" if you didn't know it was there.
I gave this cd five stars because it is very unique, especially for the christian music industry, which had been pretty "blah" up to that point. I also loved this cd because I love to sing, and this cd is very fun to sing along to. My favorite one to sing to is "Crazy" because it has a lot of attitude, and my sister and I used to sing back and forth to each other like we were arguing, which is the general feel of the song, so we had a lot of fun with this one. So to sum it all up, I would definitely recommend this cd, which is one of my favorite christian cd's of all time, and also her other cd's to everyone, including teenage girls and non-christians because the christian theme does not take the forefront in this album. If the harder christian stuff isn't for you or you just want something that says "christian" more blatantly, then you should try her newer albums because they are much tamer than this one and exhibit more obvious christian themes.
By the way, if you like this cd and are looking for some suggestions on something else to listen to because you've worn this one out (like I have), I would like to suggest that you try Evanescence's cd "Fallen." Evanescence claims that their songs are not christian, but they are clean and I believe they do have some christian undertones to them. The Christianity issue aside, Evanescence does have a similar tone to this Plumb cd and anyone who enjoyed it will probably like them as well. Anyway, I apologize for the advertisement, and I hope this review is helpful. (If anyone is wondering, "HMBN" stands for "Hopeless Music and Book Nerd.")
