Music Review: Great music, but the compilation is completely unnecesssary

I hate to be that guy who reviews a greatest hits album by his favorite band and puts it down for being an incomplete waste, but since no one else seemed to want to do it, I suppose the task was left on me. I know you've probably heard this a thousand times but, with a few exceptions, greatest hits albums are a poor choice for an introduction to a band, especially a great band like the Pixies. The reason I say this is simple - this band is so good you'll almost certainly want to buy all of their albums eventually anyway. (They only have four, not counting "Come On Pilgrim.") For just as cheap, you could get their greatest, most accessible album, "Doolittle." If you don't like that album, you don't like the Pixies. It's as simple as that. From there, you could easily just go ahead and buy "Surfer Rosa," "Bossanova," and "Trompe le Monde" and pretty quickly have all the Pixies' albums. All of them are absolutely essential and include several tracks not present here that are as good or better than the tracks that are included on this compilation album. I'm just trying to save you a few bucks, as it's inexcusable to have just a greatest hits album for this band anyway, and for not much more money you could get the complete discography. The one and only reason this collection was released was for the record company to capitalize on the Pixies' 2004 reunion tour. At least "Death to the Pixies" had the bonus live disc. There's no new or unreleased material on this thing at all, rendering this collection completely pointless for both hardcore fans and newcomers.

If you have all of the albums listed above, as well as "Pixies at the BBC" and the 2002 self-titled EP simply called "Pixies" that collected the other nine songs from the "Come On Pilgrim" sessions that were originally recorded for, along with the "Pilgrim" tracks, a demo called "The Purple Tape," then you will have a more or less complete Pixies collection. This so-called "best of" album is completely inessential. Skip over this one, no matter your level of fanaticism.
