Music reviews of I'm Not Dead

Music Review: I like this CD. I have the Platinum Edition.
Rating: 4 Stars

So with all that known, I'm gonna let you in on a few scores (at least two) including but not limited to:

*those who have this version
*those who have the version I have (platinum)
and
*comments on where you should stand, and which to get if you don't have either

Most of these songs are pretty good. Sadly, there is a few tracks (2-4) that are filler. And one of them is actually not bad.

Long Way To Happy almost makes it. It's a song about being torn but being strong and continuing on. If you listen to it, it's not what the song says per se, it's what it doesn't.

It seems like it was unfinished. So it's decent but not great. Dear Mr. President is heartfelt but for some reason I'm just not connecting with some of it. I don't know. It's sincere but it partially doesn't feel so.

It's weird. I'm kinda torn about this album as a whole but it's mostly gold. Trust me. But I wanna get the filler out of the way!

I'm Not Dead (the track) is cool production-wise but otherwise it doesn't go anywhere. I think it is there just to make the number of tracks bigger. It, like Long Way To Happy could have been left off the project completely.

Fingers or Heartbreaker (2 Platinum and import editions exclusive-tracks) could have fit on instead of those both. Sure, Fingers is "explicit" even for an explicit album but it's nothing we've never heard of. What year are we in again??

Lastly, I Have Seen The Rain is kinda cool. But not. Let's break it down:

It's essentially another decent song. But for this studio album (or any of them) it just doesn't fit well at all. Bringing in her daddy was very, very sweet and surely, she enjoyed it like she said. But really, it doesn't fit with the album whatsoever. It sounds like it should be on some older rock album. None of Pink's. Trust me.

Moving on. My favorite songs in order are:

Nobody Knows - a relate-able ballad about loneliness and not being able to fix it alone. But not actually going on to tell others. Just keeping it to yourself until it tears you apart. Watch the video again! Sure, Pink looks too glamorous and it seems unbelieve-able but believe when I say this girl writes from the heart.

Prettiness aside, you'll get the picture once you watch it (again).

#1

People say that this album is hypocritical. None of them lied. Pink bashes the president (Dear Mr. President) for not being true to us Americans, and calls out the attention-seeking celebs as well as "stupid, blond-acting girls" in Stupid Girls and then brags about how nice and big her rims are and how much money she has in Cuz I Can. Trust me when I say I wasn't the biggest fan of this song when I heard it but some of it made me not hate it. It was decent.

Now, nearly a week later, after hearing it 4x or more, I love it. Yes, it's hypocritical but it's also very truthful. Take a gander!

"So I'll cash my checks and place my bets/And hope I'll always win"

"Even if I don't I'm F*&@ed because I live a life of sin"

"But it's alright I don't give a damn/I don't play your rules I make my own"

"Tonight..."

OK. So she brags. And that's not the half of it! I just like the:

"But it's alright I don't give a damn" line. The rest is showing off, but hey. She even admits that she's a very confusing and conflicting being, and it just shows in her music. Hypocrite you may spout, but real you can't say she isn't. This song is good, and a highlight, but not in my top 4 favorites. However, it was Pink's seventh single, released as a download in Australia-only.

Moving on. Cuz I Can was pure-show, but I Got Money, even though she acts like she doesn't care about the situation she's in, she doesn't hide it easy. The tone of her voice and the repeated "or so it seems's" are a dead giveaway. She constantly says,

"You don't have to like me I don't care/I got money now."

Call me a mind-reader or what have you, but she's not happy. She's being hella-sarcastic. People who don't see this are the ones that I worry for. Listen to the song. It's called I GOT MONEY NOW and you can tell. Her vocal delivery isn't pleasant and upbeat nor show-offy (if you listen to the tone) but rather kinda sad. When she tries to convince you otherwise towards the end where her voice gets stronger saying,

"I don't need no love ... I have got enough!"

Don't believe her.

Just give it a listen. And another. Then it may make you sad. That's what happened to me!

This song was very close to being number 4. It's a great song. I couldn't see that in 2006 because it just came off as kinda standard; boring. But now, I HEAR the actual lyrics more. And the ending is very emotional and I can see myself crying to it if I actually had a love, and then he went away. For good. There are the tears, rolling...

The song is called Who Knew, and Pink looks kinda cool in it. I didn't see the beauty in this mid-tempo before. Kinda ignored it. But now I see. hahahaha

#3

The last song, which is easy to pick out of the 15 tracks that this album contains is...

*

*

You guessed it! U + Ur Hand! I LOVE this song! I'm a huge pop fan anyway, and I consider Pinks music pop-rock ATM. It was pop-laced R&B initially, and then it went into pop-rockish territory, with some other (good) stuff thrown in, to make the eclectic M!ssunderztood.

Try This, which I've heard only about 5 tracks from, is supposed to be her hardest album, rock-wise. I still call that pop-rock. Just like this one.

But back to the song! It's what revived this album from being "underrated", "unseen" and "undiscovered". It didn't really hit me until winter 2008. I mean I saw it once before that and kind of ignored it. What a big mistake! Just like Who Knew but less personal I guess but 5x as catchy, it sizzled it's way up the charts and put Pink back in the limelight for a bit. It's lyrics are very women-empowering and it takes the more subtle approach.

Especially when Pink says,

"You can say what you want to your boy-friends"

It's classic!

#4

#1 Nobody Knows 11/10
#2 I Got Money Now 10.25/10
#3 Who Knew 10/10
#4 U + Ur Hand 10/10

The album on a whole isn't a 5 but it's higher than a 4. Probably a tad higher. Filler brings it down.

Cover Art: B-
Inside Art: A- (counting the back cover, this is pretty. There are 6 pictures of her and most of them are cool. My favorites are the black-winged devil picture, the one where sun rays are beaming on her from a window and the last picture that seems almost drawn into the booklet.)
Songwriting: B- (good topics, a bit of showing off, reflecting and some contradicting words only make it that more real for me.)
Vocals: B- (smoky vocal work with just a tinge of soul. hasn't really changed over the years and Pink smokes!)
Production: B
Length: A+

Overall: 4.2 stars.

End note: First owned Pink album, but not first heard. That was Can't Take Me Home which was nice but doesn't compare to this one.

P.S. If you have this album, cool. But do you want the videos? I think it's worth selling this version of the album in order to get the Platinum edition like I have, instead.
Do you have the platinum edition? If yes, good for you!
If you want this album but now knowing that there's a platinum edition with a few more (excellent) songs, then you should go platinum. Otherwise, you must download or miss out on all the bonus tracks like U + Ur Hand (Bimbo Jones Remix), which is surprisingly better than the original, Fingers which is a seductive mid-tempo about Pink and the things she does when horny and up alone, ex-hubby sleeping, and Heartbreaker, another mid-tempo about her man loving her, but possibly not being sincere. Maybe he wasn't?
Lastly, Centerfold is on there, which isn't excellent but it's more than just decent and better than the filler that was mentioned.

Description of I'm Not Dead

Limited two disc (CD + PAL/Region 0 DVD) Australian Tour Edition of Pink's fourth album comes housed in different artwork and features two bonus remixes on the CD ('Who Knows' and 'U + Ur Hand) plus a bonus DVD featuring four video clips ('Stupid Girls', 'Who Knew', 'U + Ur Hand' and 'Nobody Knows'), two live videos ('Dear Mr. President' and 'Leave Me Alone') and two 'making of the video...' mini documentaries ('Stupid Girls' and 'U + Ur Hand'). Sony/BMG.
Some music is celebrated for its elegant subtlety; Pink's slams you over the head. Four albums in, she's not changing her formula. I'm Not Dead touches on bulimia ("Stupid Girls"), war-mongering politicians ("Dear Mr. President"), teen angst ("Conversations With My 13 Year Old Self," "Runaway"), overheated pickup artists ("U + Ur Hand"), and gross materialism ("I Got Money Now"). None of it, in other words, is for featherweight listeners. Then again, none of it suits eggheaded college tastemakers either. Where this translates, then, is with those willing to man up and embrace what makes Pink Pink: her spellbinding ability to render rebelliousness in all the many colors of the rainbow. Neil Young-inspired acoustic guitar is sketched into "The One That Got Away," but it's just as quickly scribbled over by Joan Jett-style ranting (on "Long Way to Happy") and Janis Joplin/Joss Stone-fueled howling (on "Who Knew"). Even R&B gets its turn ("I Got Money Now"). The album also includes appearances from the Indigo Girls, who duet on "Dear Mr. President," and Pink's father, who joins for the hidden track "I Have Seen The Rain." Pink pulls all of this off, and probably without even breathing hard. She's not dead. --Tammy La Gorce
