Music reviews of The Dark Side of the Moon [Vinyl]

Music Review: I've been VINYL for freaking years....
Rating: 5 Stars

(This review refers to the LP Record version)
(I really wish I could have just posted this on the page for the Dark Side of the Moon LP Record instead)

That's right, no further nastiness about how bad the CD layer is on the 30th anniversary re-release. No debate over the goofy stained glass cover which isn't actually on this version. I'm not even going to explain how many copies this album has sold and why (like every other reviewer on Amazon). This is The Dark Side of the Moon as you should have been hearing it all along.

The actual record is pressed on "heavyweight virgin vinyl," which I assume means vinyl that hasn't been recycled previously. Even on my hundred dollar Sony PSLX250H Turntable, Dark Side of the Moon played at a very consistent, steady 33 1/3 RPM and with very little noise. Nick Mason's cymbals come through high and clear as if he's playing in the same room, and Roger Waters' bass is equally clear on the other end of the spectrum. Right in the middle are Richard Wright's keyboards and David Gilmour's vocals and guitar, which are undistorted and quite sweet. From the 96/24 digital backup I made with my Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Platinum 6.1-Channel Sound Card, it appears this vinyl version has an even better dynamic range than the stereo SACD.

As for the package, have they missed ANYTHING? I mean the original cover art is reproduced down to the gatefold and all the original posters, they've included two additional posters, though one was miniature and slid under the shrink wrap in front of the prism and just says what's in the package with another pyramid photo. The only unfortunate thing is NONE are going to end up on any of my walls!

I give this release an overall resounding five stars, as nothing has been retouched, simulated, digitized, or omitted from what I can tell. Well ok, if they wanted us to all die happy they would have re-released the quad version as a companion, but... naaah. I'm happy.

Description of The Dark Side of the Moon [Vinyl]

Originally released in 1973, The Dark Side of The Moon became Pink Floyd?s first number 1 album in the US, remaining on the chart for 741 weeks between 1973 and 1988. One of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed albums of all time, The Dark Side of The Moon also introduced the iconic album cover artwork by Hipgnosis, after a request for a ?simple and bold? design.  The new Discovery version presents the original studio album, digitally remastered by James Guthrie and reissued with newly designed Digipak and a new 12 page booklet designed by Storm Thorgerson.

The ?Discovery? collection: 14 Remastered Studio Albums

Since 1967 Pink Floyd have produced one of the most outstanding and enduring catalogues in the history of recorded music. All 14 original Studio albums have now been painstakingly digitally remastered by James Guthrie (co-producer of The Wall), and are reissued with newly crafted packaging and booklets created by the band?s long-time artwork collaborator Storm Thorgerson.

?Discovery? albums are designed as an introduction to the artist, with all booklets including full album lyrics.
Dark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn't rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like "On the Run," "Time" and especially "Money" (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. This is probably Pink Floyd's best-known work, and it's an excellent place to start if you're new to the band. --Genevieve Williams
