Music Review: Era la notte: It was the night...

...It was the night... a night so mesmerizing that I don't want the sun to rise again to disturb it... or rather, don't want the music to ever end!
This is an intriguing disc. And Anna Caterina Antonacci is an intriguing singer. Hers is an exquisitely dark and expressive soprano voice well used in story telling. And what timeless stories she tells in this CD!
The tracks are:
1. Monteverdi: Lamento d'Arianna
2. Strozzi: Lamento: Lagrime mie
3. Giramo: Lamento della pazza
4. Monteverdi: Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda
The singer is only accompanied by Baroque strings conducted by Federico Sardelli. Quite a feat of singing (and this might be hard to endure by non-Baroque fans).. the last track alone is over 18 minutes long! Not many singers could have pulled this kind of theme-album off, but I think Antonacci did. She is every bit an intriguing story teller these songs require her to be. Her triple-personality narration of Monteverdi's 'Il Combattimento' alone makes this a worthy buy for fans of classical singing.
Buy if you are REALLY into the old classical vocal music. Otherwise better not. This is almost like a dramatic Gregorian chant in terms of melodic simplicity, but more intimate with solo female voice. The singer is definitely up to enlivening these story telling haunters, but the question is are you up to these 7+ minutes songs? This CD demands as much from the listener as it does the singer. You have to pay attention (no multi-tasking while listening to it!), but man... when you do, Antonacci rewards you very richly for it. The scenes come alive and her intensity sustains every second of the long arias. Artists of this caliber are rare find!
