Music Review: A Voice Forever With Us........

Phyliis Hyman was not only a vocalist with a unique sound, but she was also a gifted songwriter, both of which are highlighted on this last album recorded by her. She served as co-writer on such songs as "Strength of a Woman," Come Right, Or Not At All," "How Long," and "Tell Me What You're Gonna Do." Recorded on this album are 12 tracks and here is my review:
"Forever With You"- Makes you want to get up and dnace from the very beginning. It has a very catchy beat with a disco/80's feel.
"Funny How Love Goes"- Nice ballard/duet with Damon with a romantic edge that adds to that special moment.
"Come Right Or Not At All"- Phyllis' stylized vocals truly shine on this song along with the words that make you feel as though she is talking to you and only you.
"The Strength of a Woman"- Not crazy about the arrangement, but again the words are well chosen and offers the empowerment for women everywhere.
"Hurry Up This Way Again"- This is classic Phyllis! Her voice is indisputable in every sense of the word!
"How Long" - This cut has that "old school" club feeling from back in the day. I can only imagine how DJ Larry Levan would have mixed this. The beat is hypnotic and the words are smart, sharp and driving.
"Someone To Love"- This is the type of song that tells a story and seems to build with each stanza. You get the feeling that she is singing from the heart and it is all based on her own experiences. I "love " it!
"Tell Me What You're Gonna Do"- Not crazy about this tune. Even though it was written in 1994 it has too much of a mid 80's sound for my taste.
"The Kids"- Think "message song." This is a song you may have to listen to more than twice, but it does seem to grow on you. The lyrics and instrumentals lends itself to something that is memorable, with a nice laid back,yet haunting, jazzy feel.
"Set A Little Trap"- Definitely 80's sound here and just okay. It reminds me of something else that I have since forgotten.
"No One But You"- Phyllis' powerful words coupled with the funky beat makes this song interesting. Of course with words written by Gamble & Huff, you can't go wrong.
"Souvenirs"- This is one of my favorites on the album. It is poignant, powerful and most of all memorable.
Although this album may have some of Miss Hyman's lesser known work, it has a lot of hidden gems. This is a must have for "true" Phyllis Hyman fans and well worth the price. Enjoy!
