Music Review: proceed with caution

If Erlend Oye's sublime Dj Kicks album piqued your interest in Phoenix through the guilt-free pop tune "If I Ever Feel Better", you may want to think twice before pushing all your chips in and dropping (...) on "Alphabet". "If I Ever Feel Better" has all the catchments of a shameless pop booty shaker - infectious lyrics and chorus, jangly guitar, danceable beat, soothing synth keys, and a talented vocalist. (Hall and Oates would be so proud). The album "Alphabet" does not.
Where "If I Ever Feel Better" is cute, kitschy, earnest pop, "Alphabet" is transparent, embarrasingly gooey, and poorly produced. A lot of the right elements are there - this guy has a great voice, and whoever produced it knows that it pairs well with a synth pop sound. But where Air turn heartfelt, effete vocals and sparkling analog sounds into success, Phoenix errs on the side of Tahiti 80 - generic kick-snare beats, crummy over dubbed backup vocals, egregious use of chimes, production with all the skill of a 12 year old girl doodling on her Trapper Keeper - "I'm going to make a pretty song!". I'm all for straightforward, even cheesy pop songs, but this falls flat on it's hollow, vanilla R+B face.
Hopefully, someone with some real know-how will produce this dude's next album, and give him his proper due. As long as he's going to make formulaeic, pre-fab synth pop, why not do it right? Hook up some vocoder vocals, go heavy on the Moog, and see where it goes from there. Erlend Oye? Morgan Geist? Are you listening?
If you like synth pop done right, stick with Postal Service and avoid this album.
