Music reviews of Story of the Ghost

Music Review: Ghostly Emotional
Rating: 4 Stars

So, I'm just going to go right out and say it. Phish is one of the few remaining artists today who use their talent to amaze, enlighten, and enchant their audience. And they are one of a fewer handful of artists who make and play their music, if not live their lives, solely for the happiness of their audience. Every studio album, while nothing compared to the live experience of Phish, compiles their songs into something whole and living, which transcends everything that your normal, everyday 'good album' has. Billy Breathes instantly became a journey of freeing your mind, rocketing you off into the stratosphere with the first few numbers and then you find yourself melting away into the universe by the time the last song came into play. And with every new album, Phish has been more than welcome to show us their progressing talents, taking musical genius further and further in every direction possible.

Story of the Ghost is a perfect example of how ecclectic Phish as an instrument of pure imagination and limitless effort can be. The musical schema which predominates in this album is loose-based funk, reminescent of Galactic, which, although a relatively new sound to the band, seems very elastic when Phish builds their exaggerated jams from it. "Ghost," "Meat," and "MOMA Dance" are all ear-deep in this. While they do go to new extremes in experimenting with interesting areas, they still retain their original sound. The opera-esque "Guyute" brings us back to Phish's ability to tell a story through not just their lyrics but instruments. "Water in the Sky" gives us another earful of bluegrass wonder, showing us their progressing interest in the genre, while Trey and Page once again take us into a tornado of twisting lyrical devices in "Limb by Limb." But the peak of Story of the Ghost has to be in "Wading in the Velvet Sea," in my opinion a landmark in musical genius. Never before have I ever heard a song which, in every aspect, could describe and convey a specific emotion and spin itself throughout your soul. From the potently metaphorical lyrics to the comforting sounds of Page's keyboard to the mountain ranges made by Trey's guitar, the band has done the impossible - they have created, not just defined, an emotion.

Story of the Ghost does have its flaws in comparison to the other studio albums. But how can you compare one album to another? As a whole, the album seems rather passive-aggressive, going from mind shattering songs to rather mediocre ones(by Phish standards.) And the production of the album is nowhere near top. I don't think I would suggest this album as your first Phish buy, but I would recommend it be your second or third. Upon listening to it, it is easy to pick up on how unearthly the talent of this band is.

The only ones more ardent and fanatical than Phish lovers are Phish haters, and of course, both parties support their opinions based on the exact same criteria. However, as the band matures and their sound ripens, the naysayers' stance becomes increasingly difficult to defend. Ghost, their seventh studio effort, is the quartet's most balanced and well-rounded studio collection, one that finds the middle ground between their wild stage forays and their more recent toned-down records while intensifying their ever-growing "cow funk" elements. Along the way there is room for concise song craft and angular complex journeys; thick funk, high-tempo romps, and quiet reflective passages; nuggets of lyrical wisdom floating in the usual sea of nonsense; cerebral prog-rock majesty tempered by visceral one- chord grooves; simplicity and psychedelia; instrumental precision and loose rambling. The twists and turns of "Guyute" will be familiar to the congregation as will the deep funk of "Meat" and bookends "Ghost" and "The Moma Dance." "Water in the Sky" takes a classic country progression and infuses it with a propulsive, almost Latin rhythm. Early-period albums may have better (and lengthier) jams, later albums may have better songs, but no other Phish album blends both aesthetics as well. --Marc Greilsamer
