Music reviews of Joy

Music Review: Good Songs, overall. Production takes away from it...
Rating: 3 Stars

Without getting into the "Old Phish, New Phish, Red Phish, Blue Phish" discussion, which is really irrelevant, I'd like to say that they've included some great songs here.

Negatives:
The production value leaves the sound TOO CLEAN. (No harmonics, guitar sounds "studio")
A few of the tracks feel like they are either Mike or Trey solo tracks and not band compilations.
Most of the "choruses" are just an added voice effect or double tracking of the singer (Trey/Mike/Page).

Songs:
Backwards Down the Number Line is a great album opener. The "Happy, Happy" part may seem a little cheesy, but it is their first album back, and I was just thinking, "YES!" the whole time. Good tune overall. Rating - 6/10.

Stealing Time from the Faulty Plan starts out with some good rhythm and blues. This definitely sounds like a band effort. There's a lot of room open for some massive jams coming out of this one. Love it. Rating - 8/10.

Joy feels like it could have been on Trey's album "Shine". Very likable, but I don't see it inspiring many jams. Rating - 6/10.

Sugar Shack - many "false fans" like this tune. (You know, the one's that claim that Junta is Phish's best album, and rip all the "commercial" songs. They're just haters of good songs.) Here's an oddball by Mike. It's what you'd call a "bathroom break" song if played live. Skip it. Rating - 2/10.

Ocelot - Back to Trey's album. I like the way the lyrics are enunciated. Not too much substance to it, but it's fun. Rating - 5/10.

Kill Devil Falls is a ROCKER live. I was actually very disappointed with the production of this song. A lot of the intensity of the song is lost in this flat recording. This may actually be the best song on the album. When Phish wants to rock, get out of the way. Rating - 9.5/10.

Light - If there's anything a "fake fan" would like, it'd be this one. The song falls flat in many areas. The lyrics aren't that clever, and it is very "formula" the way the build up -> lyric section works. It's no Sugar Shack, but you may still be better off not hearing this one. Rating - 3/10.

I Been Around is a refreshing Page tune. Bluesy and piano-centric, you start wondering where it was earlier. Great tune. Rating 7/10.

Time Turns Elastic - It sure does. They could have made it into more of a Phish tune by switching off the vocal duties amongst band members, but this is Trey's baby. The "Carousel" part brings the song full circle. Here's a return to the multi-part song that is a refreshing throw back to the heyday of Harry Hood and Fluffhead. Rating - 9/10.

Twenty Years Later ends the album wonderfully. There's a bit of the crafty Limb-by-Limb style lyrics, although the numbers seem to remind me of Two Versions of Me as well. Either way, it's a great end to the album. Rating - 8/10.

Fake Fans beware: THIS IS NOT PHISH FROM TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. "FLUFFHEAD" IS NOT ON THIS ALBUM. I know, you'd prefer a concert that consisted of Phish playing kazoos, pots & pans, rubberbands, and jugs. The rest of us prefer music. Stop putting Phish down for continuing to be creative and writing new songs. I'm glad that their stuff is genuinely popular, and you should be glad too. Good songs are what they are. Phish never has been, nor is currently trying to be "commercial", so quit your moaning.

Description of Joy

2009 studio album from the reformed band led by guitarist extraordinaire Trey Anastasio. The album was produced by Steve Lillywhite and was recorded in New York's Chung King Studios. Many of the album's 10 songs have already been road-tested during the band's reunion tour and retain their fresh, live feel on the studio recordings. The album is already being called the band's best ever studio release.
