The Bipolar Bear's Rating System used in His Database!
In my database of all CDs I rate for both Performance & Sound, going from a 1-11, with 1 being unlistenable to 9 (very, very good), 10 (excellent) to 11 (superb, can't find anything at all to complain about. In 1988, when the disc first came out I rated it as follows:
Performance: 11
Sound: 11
In my Notes field I wrote only: "For me this is Glass's finest work. Superb performance & sound." I stand by it to this day, although I do plan on getting his Symphony no. 5 and giving it a spin.
I admit that I'm a big Glass fan having: Powaqqatsi, Symphonies nos. 2 & 3, Satyagraha, Songs from Liquid Days, and the cd containing: Violin Concerto / Company / Akhnaten, 2 short pieces from the opera. My only complaint is that on discs containing more than one work the producers should allow a few more seconds between works to help those of us for whom the works are, as yet unfamiliar, a brief interlude so that we know when one work ends and the next begins. The same can be said of Telarc's recording of Hovhaness' "Mysterious Mountain" and other works. The music, being new to my ears and being in a totally unfamiliar musical style makes learning these works somewhat more difficult. But, such is not the case with Akhnaten. The music is ravishing, as is the sound, and there is no problem with continuity here.
When I got the set I paid something like $32.00 for it. Now I see that it's been repackaged into a slimline cd case and is $15.98 here on Amazon. Sorry, people, but that's a steal for something as musically entertaining as this opera is. I say, "Run right out and get it if you want to try some of the best of `new music'".
