Akhnaten, Glass's powerful third opera, is set in the time of Ancient Egypt. The title role is reserved, strong and statuesque; this is an opera of historical ghosts, and its life- flow lies in the hypnotic background provided by the orchestra; indeed, the work's haunting closing scene with its wordless melismas is like nothing else in music. It offers a theatrical experience appealing to a far wider public than usual in the opera house; and here the Stuttgart chorus and orchestra give the piece impressively committed advocacy.
