Music Review: Great Singing

Somebody famously said that Hell would mean being stuck on a musical desert island with nothing but a hundred "Peter Dawsons" (recordings that is). Or was it a thousand Peter Dawsons? No doubt I will be corrected.

Dawson sang some dreadful songs. A lot of dreadful songs. His 3000 or so recordings were mostly awful songs. (There is a treasurable collection of operatic recordings sung in English but none of that here).

The point about this disc is that it is a good selection of his recordings of songs and they are very well transferred. They are all sung so absolutely beautifully and with such sincerety that it is possible to overcome your prejudices about the music. Jerusalem is an eternal classic, as, I would argue, is Waltzing Matilda. Here is Dawson's good humour shining through when he sings "Down by a billy-bong" instead of billabong. I find it endearing because I grew up with that sort humour from the older generation of Australians. His humour shines in personal favourite The Floral Dance, and also in Phil the Fluter's Ball. And I must admit to always admiring his version of the Cobbler's Song. I think there is a point that arises from that. I have never heard better versions of some of these old songs like Roses of Piccardy.

It will be a great shame if the day comes when we no longer listen to Peter. He was a truly great singer.
