Music Review: Dreadful, poorly paced performance

I own more than a dozen performances of this lovely Chinese concerto, including four by Mdme Heymann. Suffice to say that her four readings make up for the bottom four of them - and I must say that this, her latest rendition, is the worst by a considerable margin.
Advancing age has done nothing to improve this violinist's thin tone and mediocre technique, nor her poor pacing. Her latest Butterfly Lovers Concerto is achingly slow, soggy & mushy in the extreme. Nishizaki's patent mediocrity is matched by the routine, unengaged playing of the New Zealand Symphony. James Judd and his players sleepwalk through the motions, and their unfamiliarity with the music is very easy to spot. Superior sound (for Naxos anyway) is no help here!
If you want a recording of this lovely work, consider the vastly superior Gil Shaham, accompanied by the Singapore Symphony under Lan Shui. He has the tonal beauty, sureness of touch and general intelligence in pacing that Nishizaki lacks. Plus, his recording is coupled with a very good performance of the Tchaikovsky concerto, while the Nishizaki is, somehow suitably, accompanied by a flat, harmless compendium of Chinese folk tunes, poorly arranged by Peter Breiner.
Description of The Butterfly Lovers Concerto
The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, scored for solo violin and Western orchestra, is one of the best known of all contemporary Chinese compositions. It has become indelibly linked with Takako Nishizaki, whose seventh recording of this hugely popular work features on this disc. Songs and Dances from the Silk Road, by the Slovak-born Peter Breiner, is based on traditional melodies to be heard in the West of China, from where the famous Silk Road takes its course through Central Asia to the Occident. Takako Nishizaki is one of the world's most recorded and appreciated violinists, especially beloved in China and other parts of Southeast Asia through her many popular recordings and personal appearances in concerts and in the media.
