Music Review: A Good Place to Start

This package is right up there with Mat Cranitch's as a super introduction to Irish style and repertoire, and everything in my review of that package applies here. This book is more explicit about the mechanics of the style, and hence is the primary tool in my teaching practice, where I deal with many newcomers to fiddle as well as to the Irish idiom. The CDs are useful in explaining technique, but are not sufficient for explicating actual performance practice - you'll do well to study the recordings listed in the discography among others.

I teach from this book, and use Matt's and the one by Paul McNevin for supplementary material. If you are working on your own, get all three; they reinforce and compliment each other marvelously.
