Music Review: SHARP

After the success of their first two 80s albums (PLEASE, ACTUALLY) established them as exquisite purveyors of hi-energy-fuelled POP, the PET SHOP BOYS rapidly started to experiment within the format of their music. That produced a series of works where new influences came to the fore: house (INTROSPECTIVE), electro and rock balladry (BEHAVIOUR, RELEASE), latin rhythms (BILINGUAL), disco-pop and euro-dance (VERY, NIGHTLIFE) all became part of their gleaming sound, sometimes leaving music lovers a bit surprised at these deft transformations.
It was only with FUNDAMENTAL (2006) that a return to their original style was signalled, although that album still experimented (beautifully) with techno and orchestral soul. It had been a long and fruitful journey, but it now seemed that the PSB were once again aiming at those dizzy 80s POP heights.
That is exactly what happens behind the mondrianeque cover of YES, their tenth, XENOMANIA-produced studio album. Eleven tracks, forty-eight minutes. Eleven singles, ready to triumph all over the world, if only the world were still a liveable place.
The rush and the truth of these songs is deep, intoxicating. NEIL TENNANT has now become the new COLE PORTER, his voice and lyrics striking a perfect balance between detachment and tenderness. The music glides along, serenely modern and impeccably melancholic, matching the glory of ACTUALLY to the sombre tones of BEHAVIOUR, not to mention the golden aura of that first ELECTRONIC album (JOHNNY MARR is on three tracks).
The ballads are moving and lush, courtesy of Mr OWEN PALLETT, who arranged the strings. The uptempo tracks are nimble, eminently danceable gems. Wit and elegance sparkle throughout.
Highlights? Every single track, but if we had to choose we would say: VULNERABLE, MORE THAN A DREAM and THE WAY IT USED TO BE, all breathtaking examples of pure, untouchable songwriting.
Yes, the PET SHOP BOYS are back at their POP sharpest. There is still one reason to live on this planet, after all.
