Music Review: One of the definitive PSB releases

Like Soft Cell did in 1982, Pet Shop Boys followed up their debut "Please" with a remix collection. "Disco" combined the four album singles with two B-sides to create a six-song EP. The lengthy tracks, however, brought it up to a comparable running time, and "Disco" got a wide release. It was as if the record company finally owned up to the market potential for remixes.
The result is a crucial moment for me personally; I liked "Please" a lot, but I didn't expect much from "Disco" since it was all previously released material. Boy was I wrong! These songs all sound great together. That's part of what is so interesting about "Disco"--it's not all about the music, it's about the packaging of alternate versions and the way they can add to a band's mystique. It certainly worked for Pet Shop Boys; a lot of people were crazy about "Please" and wanted more. "Disco" gave them something to enjoy until the next album was ready.
