Music Review: A mix of remixes and new PSB

The third in the Pet Shop Boys "Disco" series is almost a full album of new stuff. Take away the remixed tracks from Release and you'd have an excellent EP worth 4 stars. As such, it's a cool bonus to that 2001 CD.
There are some great retro production numbers in '3'. The Giorgio Moroder influences remake of "London" sounds built for a German movie soundtrack, as does the Kraftwerkian touches on "Time On My Hands." Salvaging "Positive Role Model" from their musical lifts the song from obscurity (and the Barry White sample is good for a chuckle). The second version of "London" caps the album off with a cooling note, and is actually better then the original.
The remaining tracks from "Release" are standard remixes, which also makes me wonder if maybe Neil and Chris had second thoughts about that album's low-key vibe. They don't add much to their originals other than upping the energy. It also has the date-stamping vocal pitch tinkering that has since - thankfully - gone out of favor. (Thanks a lot, Cher.) It was a harbinger of the more dance-heavy Fundamental to arrive a few years later.
Overall, a nice addition to the PSB library, but not necessary outside of the fan base.
Description of Disco 3
Just as the first Disco was a companion record to 1986's Please, and Disco 2 followed 1994's Very, Pet Shop Boys' Disco 3 is meant to be an extension of the sound and feel of 2002's Release. This time around, the Boys have given the record a kitchen-sink personality all its own that also includes lots of brand-new, electro-oriented material. "Time on My Hands" starts the record with a Miss Kittin-esque edge, culminating in the coy and completely irresistible "Try It (I'm in Love with a Married Man)." Midway through, the record turns into a straight club mix infusing versions of "Sexy Northerner," "Home and Dry," and "Here" with heavy thumps and distorted embellishments. Neil Tennant's delicate piano version of "London" even provides a straight ballad for a pretty but incongruous coda. While Pet Shop Boys definitely know their way around a remix, the new material stands out, making one wish they'd kept going in what is obviously a fertile creative direction for their graceful and intelligent dance music. --Matthew CookeGeneral CDs
