Music Review: Alternating Currents

Released as a contract buster at the end of their EMI contract, the Pet Shop Boys' "Alternative" is a hodgepodge of b-sides, demos and alternate takes. It's mostly unfinished work, and it sounds it. Like most odds and sods collections, you get a series of interesting songs mingling with stuff that never got finished because they just weren't worth polishing off. Some of these songs are experiments that become uninteresting after a few listens ("Sound of The Atom Splitting") and a few B-Sides that just needed a little more work. The album title is even a sly poke at Chris and Neil's status in the indusrtry; as a genre they helpled define and as songs that were shunted aside for 'primary' selections and then spread over this two CD collection.
What "Alternative" ultimately should have been was a single disc. There's enough here to flesh out a CD that could have been as good as Introspective or maybe even Behavior, but stretched over two discs, wears thin. "Paninaro" was the single, and it's a dance-floor keeper. The boys even acknowledge in the liner notes that "Shameless" should have made the cut for Very, and easily could have been a single. The demo for "Losing My Mind" (eventually on Liza Minelli's Results) is pretty cool, and the alternate mix of "I Want a Dog" is better than the "Introspective" version. A rare personal ballad, "Your Funny Uncle," is another song that seems too good to have been abandoned, but it's a highlight on this set.
The mechanical dancefloor numbers get overwhelming and a bit repetitious (a richer production might have made "You Know Where You Went Wrong," "I Get Excited" or "It Must Be Obvious" into stellar PSB material) after awhile. The humor of covering "What Keeps Mankind Alive" from Threepenny Opera helps things along, but as previously stated, there's just too much here that is C-level to lift the good stuff out of the murk. Now that these songs are all downloadable, you can pick and choose...and make your own alternative to "Alternative."
