Music Review: Peabo-licious!

For a season, Peabo Bryson was (and for many like myself,) still IS the Soul balladeer of a lifetime. Next to Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway, there aren't anymore in his class unless of course you count Jeffrey Osbourne, Frankie Beverly and more recently, Kenny Lattimore. This special 2-disc set fully covers the best of his Capitol Records years from 1977 and takes the listener into the early parts of his Elektra and Columbia hit sessions with a return to Capitol in 1989 with "Show and Tell," which incidentally was his first #1 R&B charting hit to date.
As loving and romantic as Peabo is, there's a strange sadness in these songs that I can't quite put my finger on; it could be the longing FOR LOVE that's in his voice that somehow resonates throughout the recordings themselves, or it could be male vulnerability conveyed to such a passionate degree that it simply overtakes one as he so masterfully conveys these sometimes (for men) inner feelings which are often difficult to put into words. Whatever the case, Peabo has had that "classic love" voice for years; his phrasing as well as his vibratto are impeccable. With Bryson, there are no vocal gymnastics, only real love approached by a real (man's) voice and in that voice lies an amazingly convincing power. If you're a woman, you can't help but feel loved by him and if you're a man, you feel hopeful for and about love. The power of his voice takes one to these special places. It's about time Capitol has released such an amazing, complete and important collection which honors some of his best works. Also check out his incredible duet albums with Natalie Cole ("We're the Best of Friends" on Capitol, 1979) and with Roberta Flack ("Live and More" on Atlantic, 1980 and "Born to Love" on Capitol, 1983.) Included here are necessary selections from all of his Capitol albums, "Reaching for the Sky," "Crosswinds," "Paradise," "Turn the Hands of Time," "I Am Love" and "Don't Play with Fire," which incidently, have never seen the releases in CD format.
