Music reviews of Westing (By Musket & Sextant)

Music Review: pefect depth
Rating: 5 Stars

I bought PAVEMENT's 10" vinyl record "Perfect Sound Forever" over 20 years ago back east. I am now living in the pacific Northwest and still have that 10" and looove the heck out of it. The entire 10" is on "Westing..." along with the gorgeous 7' vinyl record "Demolition Plot J-7". That particular 7" which I also bought back eats, has my most loved Pavement song- "Perfect Depth" . The song "From Now On'' on Perfect Sound... is next followed by "Loretta's Scars" from Slanted and Enchanted. Strangely,I never really listened to subsequent Pavement releases beyond occasionally hearing them in passing on the radio. And this despite my being a dj at a college radio station for 17 years! I think it is because i am what my girlfriend tells me I am -a music snob, haha. I loved Slanted and Enchanted and every release before that and I knew subsequent releases were more polished and were actually be chosen over earlier release for airplay which irked the heck out of me. Similar to the what befell the Flaming Lips. Most everyone first heard of the Flaming Lips via the Yoshimi release, years after their 1st few lp's and the awesome In A Priest Driven Ambulance release. And most every current dj at the time drooled over the Yoshimi release and were ignorant of their way earlier releases. Pavement were received similarly. Everyone loved the more pretty new songs but couldn't hang with the earlier songs. Some who have commented here can't hang with Westing... Move on then. You don't get, don't feel it and likely never will. I do and others do feel that rush when we here these songs. The songs are not noise to us. They are beautiful and cherished. And it made my heart go incandescent when I saw and heard Pavement play "Perfect Depth" years ago on the Slanted tour

Description of Westing (By Musket & Sextant)

A collection of all of Pavement's low-fidelity early singles and EPs, which feature considerably less melody than Slanted and Enchanted. It's nice to have this rare material on one CD, although the music is defiantly anti-CD. Those who boarded the train with the acclaimed Slanted and Enchanted should catch up on what they've missed. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
Warning: This collection is not for fans of high-fidelity music. Pavement's early days were marred by murk; call it the limitation of the early days of any band, but nobody in the early '90s wanted this sound. Pavement seized it, wrapped it up in enigmatic packages, and soon a cult following was born. Westing (by Musket and Sextant) captures several early 7-inches and EPs for a look back at Pavement's gestation. All the essential elements are here, from Stephen Malkmus's beyond-bebop lyricism to white-heat guitars that sound like they're coming from the dark side of an Edison cylinder. Anyone swayed by the last couple of Pavement albums may not enjoy this collection unless they also appreciate edgy acts like the Fall and Swell Maps. It sounds quite tinny and one may wonder if there's anything on Westing that resembles a radio-ready hit. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it? --Jason Josephes
