Music Review: probably not as good as it could have been...

some bigger names would have been nice: stephen merrit, lou barlow, superchunk, mountain goats, long winters? i dunno. i love silkworm, and i love what tindersticks brought to the table, but some bigger names--and with them, bigger talent--really would have fleshed this out.

of the almost 40 tracks here, some are startling good takes on pavement classics. of course, the problems are more plentiful: there are, inexplicably, three different interpretations of "here"...granted, it is without doubt one their best cuts, but repeating it twice after the initial (and best) rendition means that two other pavement songs got nixed altogether. classics notably missing from the track list are "grounded" (simply inexcusable), "easily fooled," "carrot rope," "debris slide," "baptiss blacktick," "stereo" (another downright shocker), "conduit for sale," "silence kid," "filmore jive," "rattled by the rush," "at&t," "grave architecture" (the horror), "major leagues," and "spit on a stranger." on the other hand, mere featherweight throwaways such as "grangsters & pranksters," "i love perth," "baby, yeah," "dancing with the elders," and "winner of the..." show up. thankfully, there were a few nice surprises: "circa 1762" and "give it a day" among them. generally, the acoustic covers are the best, highlighting as they do the oft-overlooked and uncomplicated beauty of malkmus' songwriting. "here," "give it a day," "shoot the singer," and "and then..." all get premium acoustic treatment (the latter by silkworm). the best track of all may be the techno transformation of "in the mouth a desert," but the positively grandiose "stop breathin'" gives it a run for its money. all in all, a very interesting listen, worth buying for the fans. a little too heavy on the early singles, and little lacking in the wowee zowee department, but it's a project undertaken out of love, and i'm glad to see they pulled off a respectable set of songs.
