Music Review: Something For Nearly Every Taste

Though Paul Thorn has been recording for some time, I'd never heard of him until a friend with a knack for digging up obscure blues and Americana artists turned me on to him several months ago. On So Far So Good, Thorn covers a lot of musical territory: alt country, rock, blues, and even soul. Maybe the fact that he's from Elvis Presley's hometown of Tupelo Mississippi which is a sort of musical crossroads has something to do with his eclectic offerings and obviously disparate influences.
As far as live recordings go, this one is quite entertaining. On the DVD, Thorn intersperses his often autobiographical songs with amusing and ribald tales of his life growing up a working-class Southerner. Sometimes his self-deprecating humor infects his songs and I find his depictions of trailer-trash life to be very amusing. In any case, while the lyrical appeal may be limited to those who live the kind of life he sings about or who know of those who do, the musicianship is rousing and should please rockers and modern alt-country folks alike.
To my ears, the best cuts are A Lot of Good Reasons, Burn Down the Trailer Park, I Have A Good Day and Ain't Love Strange. Those who enjoy humorous lyrics should enjoy Hammer & Nail, Joanie The Jehovah's Witness Stripper, Mission Temple Fireworks Stand, and the hilarious acoustic cut I Guess I'll Just Stay Married. A short film called Fellow Americans that closes out the DVD gives the viewer a little more of an idea of what Paul Thorn is all about.
What makes this set such a great value is the inclusion of a CD containing sixteen mostly excellent songs, nine of which are also on the DVD. Of the songs only on the CD, That's A Lie is surely the best. So Far So Good: The Best of the Paul Thorn Band Live comes with a useful insert which contains DVD info and Thorn's musings on his fellow musicians. If you are new to the music of Paul Thorn, I can't think of a better introduction than this!
