Paul Oakenfold - Tranceport
This cd is one of the most loved electronica/trance cds here in the states and is Mr Oakenfold's U.S. debut. However, calling it the best trance CD out there is a little much, as it is good no doubt, but hardly the best and hardly the best in the Tranceport series.
1. The Dream Traveler - Time (Original Mix)
This is a decent track, nothing exciting but gives us a good intro to the mix and sets the stage; it is kind of light and fluffy.
2. Greece 2000 (Original Mix)- Three Drives On A Vinyl
Nice mix going into this song, which is good but a rather over rated track. Another slowish, intro track, but with more of a
breakdown in it.
3. Rendezvous (Quadraphonic Mix)- Tilt v. Paul Van Dyk
A nice melodic track, one of the highlights on the album. Its a bit heavier on the lower register then most other songs in this mix, and is also the shortest song on this mix.
4. Purple (Sasha v. The Light)- Gus Gus
Another great trach, although a bit overhyped. Its got nice effects and synths, another highlight on the album. It is light and trippy, and seems to take the mix down a notch from the last track.
5. Someone (Slacker and Original Vocal Mix)- Ascension
The worst song on the cd, the mix into this cd kinda falters a bit, and its filled with vocals. Vocals are not bad, but this style of track is one you would hear on the radio and is a precursor to such songs as Heaven and Castles in the Sky. It is also the only vocal track on the cd, and so far Oakenfold has kept a melodic, light, relaxing trance mix, this song seems really out of place.
6. El Nino (Matt Darey 12" Mix)- Agnelli + Nelson
This song is pretty good, its pretty much one giant buildup (the longest buildup ever i would think, its over a minute long) and brings the mix back to where it is supposed to be after the last highly vocal track. One of my favorites on the cd.
7. Cafe Del Mar (Three N One Remix)- Energy 52
This song is probably one of the best trance songs out there (after Airwave and For an Angel). It moves along nicely and a bit more then any previous tracks, and adds a little bit of speed to the mix. One of the more danceable and anthemic tunes on the cd and a high point in the mix.
8. 1998 (Original Mix/PVD Mix)- Binary Finary
Binary Finary is a classic track that, sadly, i feel gets wrecked in this mix. Its the second shortest song on the cd and it sounds like it has been downplayed and has no bass and a very subdued feeling when listening to it and i feel this makes it sound alot less appealing then it can. This song would be one of my favorites on this cd but i dont like the way it was presented, very subdued and the song was turned into a bridge more then a prescence which this song really is. I have no problems with bridges, but don't use anthemic songs like this to bridge two halves of the mix. Especially since the second half of the song was a mix into the next song.
9. Words (For Love (Original Mix)- Paul Van Dyk
This song is good but what kills it is its placement in the mix. Its a very introductory track that should belong somewhere ahead in the mix. Although having it right after the bridge track with such a long intro you can say the mix has a second feeling from here on in. This song hits more with bass and is less light on the ears then the first half of the cd, but as far as pacing goes it is like we are at the beginning again.
10. Gamemaster (Original Mix)- Lost Tribe
The second vocal track on the cd, but the vocals here are not very annoying. Matt Darey though, has a rather mainstream sound which works for this track as it functions like the "arms in the air" portion of the cd. Very anthemic and the high point of the cd.
11. Enervate (Original Mix)- Transa
A very nice tune, it brings u down from the euphoric state of the last track. The last 3 tracks here are much harder hitting then the rest of the cd and while Enervate is not as hard hitting as say, Gamemaster, its still very moving and more psychedelic to carry on. This does not leave you hanging like a number of other mixes out there. Another one of my favorites on the cd.
Thoughts:
Tranceport is a good mix but very overhyped. There are better trance mixes out there and while it is good, it does not do much compared to today's standards. It was one of the records that brought trance to the United States and thus it has more mainstream appeal, like including Someone on the tracklist. Oakenfold mixes the tracks just fine, although his track selection and style i dont always agree with (for example his use of Binary Finary) but his job was to make a cd to appeal to the U.S. public and we all know how much they gobble up Pop sounding songs ;)
Conclusion:
Tranceport is not the best, but it is far from the worst. If you had to buy one trance cd, this would be it. If you want to introduce someone to the genre, this would be it. If you want are a hardcore fan, get this for sentimental value. It is one of those cds that should be in every serious trance collection but dont expect the word of god on a cd on this one. It is an introductory trance cd and should be treated so, and in this aspect i think Oakenfold suceeded wonderfully.

Description of TranceportAn essential collection of some of the worlds most talented progressive trance artists, featuring the style and ablility of Paul Oakenfold mixing classic tracks by Gus Gus, Paul Van Dyk and more. 1998 release. Standard jewel case. Of all the genres within electronic music, trance probably gets the worst rap. The music is guilty by association with the hippies that worship it with a religious-like fervor. And if executed poorly, its dramatic crescendos sound like pretentious, pompous pap. But a good trance DJ can save a string of the genre's records from falling down the drain of all-too-common gargantuan breakdowns and endless wind-ups. Paul Oakenfold might be the DJ to rescue trance from itself; Tranceport features a veritable who's who of trance records and producers--Sasha's remix of Gus Gus's "Purple," a few tracks from seminal trance producer Paul van Dyk, and the driving, impenetrable "Enervate" by Transa. Oakenfold's mixing is impeccably suited to trance: long, drawn-out bleeds of sound seep from one transcendent track to the next. --Tricia Romano
