Music reviews of McCartneyMusic Review: Sir Paul works HARD on this
I don't know if it is appropriate for me to rate this album fairly as I am consider myself more of a John fan, but I am a true Beatles fan, so I couldn't resist speaking up a bit about it. This is a nice try by Sir Paul to quickly get quality material out right after the Beatles demise ahead of his other Beatle friends. Paul worked awfully hard on this, but it sadly doesn't match up to some of his later efforts to come, notably Ram, and of course, Band On The Run. I think Paul knew that he would be ripped for this release because he had to dip into his Beatle days for a few tracks. Also, he wanted to top his former partner John, so he hurriedly gathered up as much quality material in his own mind before John had the chance to finish his first solo effort. He knew that John would have much to say about the Beatles breakup, and he wanted to do the same. So, in short, the lack of quality here doesn't surprise me since Paul was never big on making statements with his material. This effort is a product of the turmoil of the time. However, in view of the turmoil, there is some quality material here, a tribute to Paul's excellence as musician and songwriter. One point that has to be made here is that Paul was unjustly considered the villian in the Beatles demise, so he was on his own completely in the production of this album. Paul had to do it all himself, including drums, which he handles quite well, particularly on That Would Be Something. (A sidenote here...Paul often was the drummer in the Beatles early days...Pre-studio and Pre-Hamburg, Germany days.) You can really feel the sadness and lonliness on this album. I can't help feel while listening to it (which I've done many times), I keep saying to myself (and possibly Paul did too)....ohhhh, if only the other Beatles has played on this....Ah well, we can dream, can't we??? And possibly Paul was still waking up from that dream. As others have noted here, if you are a true Paul fan, you will love this album, but if you want a more intimate picture of that period of time, I would skip this and choose John's Plastic Ono Band album or even George's All Things Must Pass. But don't miss out on Maybe I'm Amazed here....still one of Paul's better tracks in his whole solo career...and I might add much better done here than the live version from Wings Over America.
