Music reviews of Unplugged: Live

Music Review: Who are you??? And what have you done with that cute ex-Beatle????
Rating: 5 Stars

Or so might you say if you hadn't 1) happened to have seen this MTV "Unplugged" special way back when (the copyright tells me it was recorded in 1991) or 2) happened to have seen Sir Paul on a solo tour since about 1992. Because in many ways, this cozy little performance, supported by the crew who will back him up on some of these future tours (Hamish, Wix, Blair Cunningham, Robbie McIntosh & the late Lady Linda McCartney) and with its intimate feel, is a precursor to those shows (despite his appearance in huge arenas, McCartney has taken to devices that encourage a "sitting together by the bonfire" feel, such as Beatle singalongs, and the audience back-and-forth that occurs here).

Of course, all "Unplugged" artists, including Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, and Arrested Development, have at first taken our breath away with their performances. It's no surprise that McCartney sounds different with an accoustic guitar. The surprise here comes in some measure from the songs he chooses for the performance. These include some old chestnuts of blues and rockabilly ("San Francisco Blues", Bill Monroe's "Blue Moon of Kentucky", and an early Elvis hit, "Good Rockin' Tonight"). He mixes in some baby pictures: the "first song I ever wrote" with the Beatle-censured line "[her]hair didn't always curl" (no wonder!), and a sprinkling of Beatles' tunes: "Here, There & Everywhere", "We Can Work It Out", "And I Love Her".

(One may pause here and reflect upon the patience the late Lady Linda must have had to sing backup vocals on songs about Sir Paul's former fiancee, Jane Asher. Of course, Lady Linda didn't sing very *well*, so that might have been the payback. Either the engineer or those doing the mastering must have known this, because it's difficult to pick her voice out.)

On Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine", Paul gives the mike to Hamish and picks up the brushes. Hamish does well with the piece, although he's no John Lennon.

"Here, There and Everywhere" is my favorite on the CD, made particularly special by Wix, normally on piano, who picks up an accordion for this one. It reminds me that Paul got a lot of mileage from listening to the French and Flemmish speaking bards of the fifties and sixties, who inspired "Michelle". Here, the accordion takes the place of the backing trio harmonies, as if being played in some dark cavernous French bar, as the bereted vocalist declares his love for the *amour seule de son coeur* who must be omnipresent.

When Paul does get around to playing post-Beatle songs of his own, they are from his first solo LP, "McCartney", recorded before the Beatles had even broken up, in 1969 (their partnership was disolved in April of 1970). So much for using "Unplugged" as a vehicle to for his latest efforts, or as a greatest hits compilation! Paul seems instead to want to choose which songs in his own repertoire sound best in a small, accoustic setting; and which ones of his favorite artists he would like to play. A good formula for sounding great! And he does. As do Hamish and Wix. Linda....not so much. But when she was there, Paul felt better, and when Paul felt better, who knows? He doesn't always write his best at those times, but performance can be a different beast. It certainly brought out his best on this occasion.
