Music reviews of Memory Almost Full [Deluxe Limited Edition]

Music Review: Memory Almost Full - Musically Almost Empty
Rating: 2 Stars

Here is an assortment of tunes from a few years back that Paul wanted to clean up and finish off so he could move on to whatever comes next. Okay, they're done now. Thank you. Time to move on. This CD should be called POTENTIAL COMPLETELY SQUANDERED. The songs, as written, could stand beside any of his best stuff. But the production here is abysmal. I can't help but wonder what these songs would have sounded like in the hands of Nigel Godrich. If only Nigel could have produced these when he did Chaos and Creation in the Backyard.

The vocals throughout this CD are some of Paul's best and some of his most annoying. That being said, I still enjoy the high notes, squeaks, screams, squeals, yells, yodels and "yeah, yeah, yeah!" As with other Paul songs, you'll also find hooks and melodies that stick in your head.

Except for DANCE TONIGHT, I didn't like the CD the first time through. The 2nd time through I hated it.

Now it gets mysterious. On the 3rd and subsequent times I listened to the CD I found myself keying into the parts I disliked and understanding how they fit into the whole. Songs didn't sound as disjointed or erratic as before. Perhaps that's because I now knew where the song was coming from and where it was going. Who knows? (You Tell Me) But at some point it started to "work" and I became comfortable with the CD. This was much the same as warming up to Chaos & Creation. Another 'grower' here? To some degree, yes. But where Chaos and Creation in the Backyard was a masterpiece comparable to McCartney's first LP, Memory Almost Full compares more to McCartney II and comes up rather empty.

If Paul were a newcomer to the music scene I'd give this CD 3 stars or more. But this is Paul and we hold him to a higher standard. So 2 stars here. This is a shame. In my opinion, no poet, prophet, politician, performer or priest has brought more joy to people than Paul has with his music.

The following is a song by song impression of tunes and ideas that needed and deserved more than to be simply dressed in vintage clothes. Your comments both pro and con are appreciated.

1. Dance Tonight:
Dance Tonight is a delightful exception to this otherwise dismal CD. A simple song, yes, but with a fresh, joyful feeling coupled with a decent upbeat production. Instantly enjoyable from first the listening. The mandolin and vocal are top rate. Tap your feet or die. It's a keeper.

2. Ever Present Past:
Good vocals that some will probably find grating. (i.d.i.d. i did) The song has a 1970s punk/garage sound. As such it could use some refinement/enhancement/production.

3. See Your Sunshine:
The Swingle Singers revisited? Stevie Wonder could have pulled this number off with sensational results. Listen and see (hear). A silly love song with lame lyrics but that never stopped Paul from pulling off a tuneful ditty. Here's another.

4. Only Mama Knows:
One of the songs where his "busking" voice works well. Lots of feeling is conveyed in that voice. This really doesn't need a big production and the string intro and outro make a nice sandwich to the piece.

5. You Tell Me:
A good song ruined by bad (no) production. Would have benefited from more polishing and perhaps a lower key. The vocal here tends to detract from what could have been another truly great acoustic ballad. Enjoyable chord progression and melody. Nice intro until the singing starts.

6. Mr. Bellamy:
Like Mr. Bellamy, I'm up in the air about this song. While I'm not sure of the value of this song, I admit to enjoying the juxtaposition of the two voices - Mr. Bellamy and the rescue team. But my favorite part is still the instrumental last minute.

7. Gratitude:
A very good soul song that should be covered by the BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA, or the O'JAYS. It sounds like a Smokey Robinson song. I know that Paul is no Smokey, but the vocal arrangements (if not the vocals themselves) on this piece deserve points. So a good arrangement but poor production keep this from being a real standout. In fairness, there are times when his screaming voice works very well. At other times.... (How about doing it in concert as a duet with Abe?)

8. Vintage Clothes:
Odd. There's not much to this song but it's executed better than most of the others.

9. That Was Me:
A redux of Biker Like An Icon? The saxophone style vocal break is a nice touch but not enough to save this lackluster song. Here's another example of one that could have been better were it done with more thought and respect. Screaming vocals don't work well on this one. Close but no cigar because it sounds like the rush job it probably was.

10. Feet in the Clouds:
The 'sound' of this track is better than most of the others. Not a great song but Paul's vocal acrobatics with samples and strings are a nice touch. Still, he's just Winging it here.

11. House of Wax:
Nice lead guitar, especially after Paul's "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!". This could be a show-stopper in concert even if it is a bit of a plodding dirge here. It tends to grow more tedious with each listening. Not a melody that will stick in your head unless you don't want it to.

12. The End Of The End:
Obviously like LET IT BE in its concept. His lyrics carry this song but his minimalist approach which often works for him doesn't work here. It's certainly good sentimentality from Paul but his arrangement and delivery aren't up to the standard the song deserves.

13. Nod Your Head:
Sorry. I just shake my head and say, "dump it". This is like one of his stray tracks that appear sometimes between songs, but not a very good one. Unabashed filler.

Paul, you do so well on ALL of your collaborations and there are carloads of talented people out there who would give their right arm to work with you. Do it! Your solo work is genius and shines best when it's a shared creation. Also, your current band is the best since that first group you had. How about having some fun and games with the likes of David Byrne, Paul Simon, Beck, Glass, Eno, Bowie, Dion, Donovan, Ry Cooder, Dan Lanois, Jackie Lomax, Laurie Anderson, Peter Gabriel, Marc Anthony, etc., etc. The whole world is waiting to hear from you. Do it!
Added a few days later:
I enjoy this CD even if I did only give it two stars. In general there is some highly regarded music I don't enjoy. By the same token there are some totally terrible songs that I love hearing. Here it's not a matter of how much I enjoy it or not. A review should be objective. The following is a breakdown of how I reached my conclusions. What are yours?

Wingspan: Hits and History

"Many years from now" must have seemed like an understatement to 16-year-old Paul McCartney, wondering if he'd still be needed or fed at the age of 64. As it turned out, all doubt as to the latter had ceased by his 22nd birthday (though few could have predicted he'd end up washing down those meals with the liquid pride of Seattle). As to the former? Now that McCartney, as of the date of this album's release, has reached that mythic age, his greatest work is 40 years behind him, his solo peak over 30 years gone. Does the world need a new Paul McCartney album? The answer is yes, at least as much as it needs anything else that passes for music these days. With Memory Almost Full, Macca is back. No, it's not Ram or Band on the Run. It might not even be Flowers in the Dirt--in 1989, he had a full band, the support of Linda, and Elvis Costello as a collaborator. Here, he's on his own. Literally: on the majority of the tracks, everything but the strings is multi-instrumentalist Paul. But the surprise is that it's one of his freest, loosest affairs in years, sonically reminiscent of the Tug of War/Pipes of Peace era with nods to Abbey Road in the album-closing medley, McCartney's gravelly tones on "Gratitude," and 2007's version of "Her Majesty," the palate-cleansing "Nod Your Head." It's a surprise because of the album's inescapable sense of retrospection ("Ever Present Past," "Vintage Clothes," "That Was Me") and even a bit of weariness. The next-to-last song is "The End of the End," after all, in which McCartney tells us about what he'd like to happen "on the day that I die." (He wants "songs that were sung/to be hung out like blankets/that lovers have played on/and laid on while listening to songs that were sung," and will likely get his wish.) But it never gets overwhelming, for McCartney mostly resists his tendency to get plodding and maudlin. In fact, Memory Almost Full must be the most sanguine album made during the dissolution of a marriage since...well, ever. "What went out is coming back," he sings in "Vintage Clothes," and from the sound of things, that may not be just wishful thinking. What's past is prologue; if we're lucky, what to come may be McCartney's late renaissance. --Benjamin Lukoff
