Music Review: And to think John Lennon almost joined Paul for these sessions

It was quite surprising, after 'Band on the Run', that Mac would then produce an album with such an adolescent feel. There's really nothing on here with that is Beatlesque or Beatlesworthy. I remember listening to this at age 22 when it was released, and thinking, 'He's going after a new audience of young teens'. It was rather offputting, to say the least, and quite a downer after the promise of 'Band on the Run'. We now know that, absent Yoko Ono's manipulations, John Lennon and May Pang were set to join Paul in New Orleans for these sessions. However, there is nothing on this disc that Lennon could have sunk his teeth into, so it's likely they would have worked instead on some Lennon material. Rerhaps: 'Popcorn', a lost Lennon song as far as I know, but one that May Pang recalls him playing for her around that time. It was also then that McCartney was at his most desperate for collaboration with Lennon. But John was playing hard-to-get, and soon Yoko put John off-limits altogether. Perhaps Paul realized that without John's vibes, his next album would turn into a big ball of fluff. Which it did.

'Rock Show' is quite a rev-up track, but it still has a cutes-iness about it that can't quite be shaken off. 'Listen to What the Man Said' is nothing if not pleasant--and cute. The most tolerable tracks are the bona fide granny tunes: 'You Gave Me the Answer' and 'Treat Her Gently/Lonely Old People', Mac's tip of the hat to the old folks whom he always found it agreeable to chat with as a young man.

It may be hard to believe, given Paul's string of hits, but in terms of Beatlesque/Beatlesworthy material John actually out-produced Paul in the 1975-1980 era, when John was more-or-less retired (till 1980). However, the Beatle in Paul would re-surface from time to time, especially after re-immersing himself in 1960s Beatledom for the Beatles Anthology series in the mid-1990s. Along with resurgent Beatlesworthy output from George and Ringo, this is what made possible the CD-R sets behind the Amazon.com book 'Let's Put the Beatles Back Together Again 1970-2010: How to Assemble & Appreciate the 2nd Half of the Beatles' Legacy'.
