Music Review: One of Paul's best

A very entertaining, very experimental set. Paul tries a lot: synth-pop ("With a Little Luck"), rock (`I've Had Enough"; "Caf? on the Left Bank"), piano pop (title track; "Girlfriend", which I actually don't like - it was later a hit for Michael Jackson), authentic folk-rock ("Deliver Your Children"); and some weirder stuff like the awesome world-music interlude "Cuff Link" and the funny, bouncy Delta blues novelty "Famous Groupies" - well, it's weird in the way all novelties are weird, you know? There's even a rockabilly track, "Name and Address", that I'm not at all sure what to make of. There's also a Fairport Convention-influenced folk-rocker ("Don't Let It Bring You Down"), which I absolutely love. It might even get the "best-song" nod. I'd hesitate to call this a masterpiece: too many dives like the pointless "I'm Carrying"; saccharine "Children Children"; the aforementioned "Girlfriend" and the mock-arena-rocker "Spruce Moose and the Grey Goose", but this is the closest Paul ever came to replicating the "anything-goes" attitude of all those classic Beatles albums.
Description of London Town
The previous time Paul McCartney's Wings had been pared down to its core trio (Macca, wife Linda, and singer-guitarist Denny Laine), the band endured a star-crossed series of crises (the sudden defection of two band members and near-disastrous sessions in Nigeria) to produce its enduring 1973 masterpiece, Band on the Run. Conceived and recorded five years later under considerably more idyllic circumstances, London Town often seems like the previous album's laconic twin. It's also a collection whose softened edges often foreshadow the tone of not only McCartney's later, oft-critiqued solo work, but that of old partner John Lennon's final album, Double Fantasy. Suffice it to say that "With A Little Luck" is not "Band on the Run," nor will "I've Had Enough" ever challenge "Jet" for pop-icon status. Still, there are enough natural McCartney-isms here ("Caf? on the Left Bank," "I'm Carrying") to suffuse it with a consistent, breezy tone. --Jerry McCulleyGeneral CDs
