Music Review: Spare, bare, and evocative songwriting from a master

Post continues to be my favorite Paul Kelly album--and I have them all. Many of the songs were re-recorded later with more lush production, but it is the sparseness of production here that makes the songs so evocative. The words and music suck you in, play with your emotions, and leave you wanting more. I remember the first time I heard this album I was floored by the imagery: the road-weariness evoked in From St. Kilda to King's Cross, the can't-wait-to-get-the heck-outta-dodge disdain of "Adelaide", the lust/love of "You Can Put Your Shoes Under My Bed." He writes like a cinematopher photographs, a poet plays with words, or anactor speaks his/her lines: With absolute command and authority. Truly a master songwriter.
If you want to try out Paul Kelly, this is the album I recommend you start with.

Originally released in May 1985 - Post is a stark, personal collection of acoustic songs that highlight Kelly's broadly based songwriting skill. Australian Rolling Stone hailed Post as the best record of 1985. The album was produced by Clive Shakespeare (Sherbet guitarist) and Paul Kelly himself and recorded over two weeks in the summer of 1985. Charting at #46 on release; the album has nonetheless gone on to be considered an Australian classic; boasting such tracks as 'From St Kilda To Kings Cross', 'Look So Fine, Feel So Low' and 'You Can Put Your Shoes under My Bed'.
