Music Review: The End Of An Era

According to the CD jacket liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin, "Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun"--"marked the end of an era". Those same CD jacket liner notes explain that BVTATCN was not created with any theme in mind--but rather that it consists of various individual / group projects melded into a collaboration. The entire effort seems more polished and consistent than its predecessor, "Sunfighter", another Kantner-Slick-Extended Family Effort. And indeed, BVTATCN goes down very smooth. The Jefferson Starship sound in its best years (1974-1976) is evolving on this album. This record takes me in right from the beginning; there's a momentum provided by the consistent quality of the cuts; it is a very good "album" and not just a "record with a few good songs" (the latter being the case with "Sunfighter"). My only major criticism is that Grace's voice, although powerful as always, sounds strained and hoarse on this album. Highlights of BVTATCN include "Harp Tree Lament", a kind of groovy-feel-good-hippie-Big-Sur-acid-trip ballad; in a similar / parallel vein, the New Age-Higher consciousness-influenced "Your Mind Has Left Your Body"; and finally "Sketches of China", a Kantneresque rock anthem / ballad that opens with a resonating gong and features some nice backup organ as well. The tone of "Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun" is ultimately both ethereal and driven--the particular sound on this record also having been derived from secondary participation by Jerry Garcia.
