Music reviews of Get Out of My Yard

Music Review: another shredder, like my MOM is another shredder.
Rating: 5 Stars

In the interest of full disclosure, I'll start with something sure to make anything I write meaningless. Shred is NOT my first love. I only became interested via McLaughlin>Scofield>Stern>Gambale>(bump)>Van Halen(himself)>Johnson>Vai> ... then some minor interest in some other guys, and now Gilbert. It's still not my MAIN thing, but I can now say I'm really interested in some of "this stuff," in a way I'd never expected to be.
This is my first Gilbert album, and I'm just plain in love with it, for reasons that are very different from those resulting in my interest in the last two guys listed above. While, for me, Johnson and Vai express the joy and depth of what it is to be a musician (as a superset containing "guitarists") in varying ways... including their approaches to composition, Paul Gilbert comes in from a whole 'nother angle.
It's dead obvious that he not only loves but respects his instrument. You can hear it in his use of phrasing, and even in his pick attack... I find a lot of "shredder's" pick attack (even just plain pick noise) irritating at best, but it's obvious that Gilbert has put the focus of his heart and mind into EVERY aspect of the noise he's making... something I've historically been more used to seeing in certain jazz players, but have heard (duh) in Vai and Johnson. They each have a very different focus in terms of what they seem to be trying to create, but in each case it's amazing.
This recording is just ridiculously inspiring to me - not in making me want to become a shredder - but in terms of an approach or a feel in approaching music that I haven't felt so directly for years. There's a pure joy in this stuff, and a sense of humor wrapping a completely unpretensious depth. It's as though he doesn't mind if you don't get it, he's going to do his thing the way it WORKS for him, but that he'd LIKE you to get it, for reasons other than personal gain... like he's honestly sharing something.
And regarding the looseness or surface-quality of the composition here some have mentioned (and it serving his ability to spew notes) I see it in a completely different light. I remember in the past, that there were people around me who wrote from the gut, who put songs together because they loved them they way they were coming out, because they were flying by the seat of their pants (but consiously), that it was a stream of consciousness of loved noises... not without discipline, but certainly without any sense of need for apology.
Now, it is a different, less formal approach, and isn't any MORE valid than other approaches, but when pulled of like this I feel it's certainly AS valid.
After my first full listening to this CD, I was just overwhelmed the the need to go play, or to build something... it just reeks of I LOVE DOING THIS (and i'm not going to mention that i work really hard at it because i love it too much to notice).
It's interesting to me, that in the dedication to "Three E's for Edward," Gilbert mentions the joy and sense of freedom he has experienced in the work of another guitarist (and lets show a little of what appears to be an ability to put freedom, wildness, discipline, respect, joy and love all in one basket - which is a big thing in art, or life in general), while commenting on one of a collection of recorded tunes that has had a very similar effect... on me at least...
I'm pretty sure this stuff isn't for everyone, not long ago I wouldn't have thought it was for me. But on a close listen, I can't imagine not experiencing at least a little of the joy and craft this man has in his heart and gut.
