Music Review: PAUL BLEY TRIO-CLOSER

One disc,28 minutes approximately. Digitally remastered. The sound is clean and sharp. This is one of two sessions Bley recorded for ESP in the mid-sixties. The other is a quartet(Barrage) also on ESP,which features two horns from Sun Ra's group,plus the great Milford Graves on drums,and Eddie Gomez on bass. This album features,besides Bley on piano,Steve Swallow-bass,and Barry Altschul-drums. Let me say right here that this is music that has dated very little since it's recording. All the tracks are relatively short but very concise in their ideas. There are seven tracks by Carla Bley,one by Ornette Coleman,one by Annette Peacock,and one by Paul Bley. For those of you who are familiar with Coleman's music,there is a slight feeling of his presence on a number of these tracks. It's very subtle,but there-the note placements and tonal clusters will remind one of Coleman ever so slightly. This music is not dated like a lot of music from this period-it could have been recorded in the last few years with no one the wiser. At times Bley shortens his notes on the piano much like Coleman does in his music. The music has open spaces at times,in which the music seems to breathe. The bass is always underpinning everything in a subtle but inventive way. The drums weave in and out of Bley's piano,at times almost becoming another lead instrument. This is a fine example of jazz piano trio music at it's best. Some tracks are upbeat and some are slower,which gives Bley time to really express this music to it's fullest extent. This is another example of the type of music that ESP was recording during the sixties-music that should have been heard by more people than it was. With ESP now remastering it's releases,we now have another opportunity to hear some very fine jazz in all it's many guises. Don't let this pass you by if you are drawn toward fine jazz piano in a trio setting. And while you're at it,investigate some of the other ESP releases-you just might find other areas of jazz to your liking.
