Music Review: good enough, but not spectacular

I feel pretty let down with this album after waiting over 15 years to hear it.
Why did I wait 15 years? Well, I had other artists that needed my attention such as Neil Young, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Todd Rundgren, Elton John, Comus, and Santana to name just a few (of the hundreds) of bands I've been exploring all these years, and I just didn't have the time to give Patti Smith a chance.
I've heard Horses and believe it lives up to the hype it's received in recent years, but my opinion is MUCH different with Easter I'm afraid. I think much less of this album compared to Horses.
Too many of the vocal melodies feel sort of bland to me, like the songwriting just isn't up to snuff.
I'm sure Patti Smith meant well when she made this album and her lyrics are something many of her dedicated fans constantly rave about. But the songwriting is a major disappointment to me, especially after hearing the brilliantly eerie "Because the Night" featuring vocals that FLOOR me every time. The rest of the album falls short of that classic track. The sound of her voice is still really good though, and her voice alone is the reason I'm giving this album 3 out of 5 stars and not 1 or 2 stars.
I can't recommend it because Patti Smith's Easter is somewhat of a disappointment to me. I was expecting a much more interesting album and didn't get it.
Description of Easter
Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2007.Patti Smith cowrote her first big hit, "Because the Night," with Bruce Springsteen, and that track was the force behind this album's ascent of the U.S. Top 40. Never fully departing from her punk-poetess roots, Easter was nonetheless produced by hit maker Jimmy Iovine, resulting in a more accessible overall sound than her earlier work. Her vocal gymnastics and dramatic rock & roll sensibilities threw sparks in every direction, with the vitriolic "Rock N Roll Nigger" and the anthemic "Till Victory" further paving the way for punks and women rockers everywhere. Churchly keyboards and huge drums drive Smith's quest for "a reason to live" on the religiously inquisitive "Privilege" and she's unabashedly sexy on the raunchy "25th Floor."
