Music Review: P-Funk Sending Some Love To "CC" On One Of Their Most Underrated Albums

Likely because it actually came out earlier in the same here as the more well known and heralded Mothership Connection this album tends to get mildly skimped on in terms of Parliaments side of the P-Funk cannon,or it least it used to considering the positive nature of some of the reviews posted here. But even so this has always been one of my favorite Parliament albums. One reason is it really strongly begins their sense of conceptual unity. As a first concept to select for their second Cassablanca release George Clinton "put black folks in the white house" as it were. The title track,showcasing a very proto hip-hop half sung vocal and the beginning of Bernie Worrell's interest in "video game" sounding synthesizer texures adding to that influence begins the concept both comically and topically. Of course being a city with such a strong black population and culture George muses "we didn't get our 40 acres and a mule but we did get CC" and also selects Ike Turner,Stevie Wonder,Richard Pryor and Aretha Franklin as members of his cabinet. It's as much a musical metaphore as it is a political one. One of the things I find the most important about this album is how much it tends to emphasize heavy P-Funk in much the same manner as the follow up would;"Ride On",the beautifully harmonized "Together","Side Effects","What Comes Funky" and "Big Footin" are all heavy,stomping and throbbing funk showcasing the band working full throttle with the bass/guitar lines,horns,vocal harmonies,keyboards and drums keeping things on the one for as long as they want to do it. This album does have it's fair share of diversity too but it's based more soley in R&B/funk than the previous album was at times. Bernie is showcased on the almost Stevie Wonder-like "Bach soul" of "Let Me Be" with it's combination of European classically chorded keyboard textures and gospel intonations. "If It Don't Fit (Don't Force It)" has a faster funk/rock Sly flavor again somewhat in the spirit if quicker in tempo than "Testify" from the previous album-same goes for the plucky bonus track "Common Law Wife". "I Misjudged You" is the albums lone ballad and again a very gospel/doo-wop one at that. Even though this albums concept,in this case a much more topically terrestrial one than the cosmic metaphores they'd become known for very soon is much looser than how they'd come off later this emmerges as the more definative of Parliaments earlier Cassablanca recordings and stands up incredibly well to the test of time.
